JOB SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Director of Care or designate, and working collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team, provides individualized nursing care to residents by promoting quality of life consistent with current Nursing Standards of Professional Practice under the College of Registered Nurses Association of BC. Also provides care in accordance with the Spirituality, Mission and Values of Columbus Residence and the philosophy of care relating to policies/procedures of Columbus Residence. Performs other related duties as providing work direction and guidance to the Licensed Practical Nurses and Care Aides in their application of resident care, assigning tasks and demonstrating work routines.
In the absence of all management staff, acts as facility-wide supervisor.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Understands supports and implements the philosophy, mission and policies of Columbus Residence.
2. Understands, supports and implements the CRNBC "Standards for Nursing Practice." Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates nursing care of residents, through diagnosing actual or potential problems and strengths; planning interventions; performing the planned interventions and evaluating the outcomes. Processes physician's orders and explains the orders to appropriate staff. Documents relevant observations including resident and family teaching and evaluation of nursing care.
3. Provides direct nursing care to residents, including: (1) assisting residents to maintain, regain or maximize physical and physiological functioning, (2) assisting residents to meet their psychological and emotional needs, (3) supporting residents in the event of a sudden or unpredictable change in status, (4) communicating relevant information about resident’s status to significant others.
4. Maintains a good knowledge of all reporting forms and procedures at Columbus Residence, and uses them appropriately.
5. Contributes to the maintenance and revision of health care plans for each resident, and also other written communication systems. Collects resident related data. Charts and documents all pertinent activities in an appropriate manner.
6. Participates in orientation, teaching and counseling for residents, family and staff. Gives direction to direct care workers in the provision of nursing care and the fostering of residents' autonomy and independence.
7. Participates in planning, implementing and evaluating standards of care in Columbus Residence.
8. Coordinates the flow of care for residents by liaising with a range of health care professionals.
9. Uses good body mechanics and lifting techniques at all times, and teaches same to other staff.
10. Helps to maintain a clean, homelike, safe environment in all areas of the facility.
11. Ensures residents' rights of privacy and confidentiality are maintained. Has a good understanding of the two documents: "Columbus Residence Statement of the Rights of Each Resident" and "Columbus Residence Statement of the Responsibilities of Each Resident." Always works to ensure these rights and responsibilities are maximally met by self, peers, and those under nurse's supervision.
12. Contributes to the evaluation of Care Aides and LPN’s in the Department.
13. Distributes medications in a protected and efficient manner and evaluates their effectiveness.
14. Co-ordinates and assists with admissions, discharges, and internal transfers.
15.
Works co-operatively with families and friends of residents, and also community volunteers in all matters pertaining to residents' well being.
16. Maintains a good operating knowledge of the WHMIS procedures, fire alarm procedures and evacuation procedures.
17. Maintains a good operating knowledge of the nurse call system, the telephones, the T.V. monitoring system, the Watchmate system, the front door intercom, and the door alarm system. Monitors all these systems and responds quickly to all calls.
18. Encourages an interest amongst staff to acquire ongoing education in the field of gerontology and long term care.
19. Attends staff development programs when possible.
20. Participates in interdisciplinary conferences.
21. Serves on committees and attends meetings as required by the Management Team.
22. Oversees housekeeping activities and personal laundry functions when the Care Department and Support Services Managers are absent. Works co-operatively with all managers and staff in all departments.
23. Identifies and corrects potential hazards that may affect the safety of residents, staff, or visitors of Columbus Residence.
24. Ensures all equipment is used and stored in a safe and efficient manner. Takes and records equipment and supply inventories as needed.
25. Participates in quality assurance programs.
26. Encourages a warm and supportive attitude among staff members.
27. Sets a good example of professional behavior and appearance.
28. Performs other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Current Professional Registration with CRNBC or RPNBC mandatory
EDUCATION (MANDATORY):
Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse program. Current Level "A: First Aid certificate from a recognized agency.

Pay: $41.42-$55.91 per hour
