JOB HOURS

- For this casual position, we prefer candidates who have full availability in the evenings and over weekends.
- Please note: there is no guaranteed hours for a casual position.
- We have three typical shifts, casual LPN can be scheduled for any of these shifts:
- Day Shift: 7am - 3:15pm; Evening Shift: 3pm - 11:15pm (preferred); Night Shift: 11pm - 6:15am.

JOB SUMMARY

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) reports to the Director of Care. The LPN is responsible for the provision of personal care assistance, nursing procedures, medication administration, the supervision of Health Care Aides (HCA) and other non-regulated health care staff and implementing the resident care plan according for the group of residents assigned.

The LPN works with the resident/family and interdisciplinary team to meet the care requirements of residents and communicates concerns about specific residents or the group of residents back to the Director of Care and/or Client Care Coordinator. The LPN provides support, advocacy, and choice to residents and their families to ensure the highest quality of quality of resident focused care achievable within the standards of qualified nursing practice. Demonstrates ongoing competence utilizing knowledge, skill, judgment, and evidence-based practice in caring for the resident. Ensures compliance with, continuing care health service standards, employment and safety-related statues, legislation, codes, regulations and GAM policies. Provides support to the residents and families in an environment that promotes a state of wellness, independence and person-centered care. The License Practical Nurse shall work in accordance to the legislation as outlined by the Health Professions Act (HPA).

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

- Assesses, plans, develops, implements, communicates and evaluates assigned residents to identify the changing care needs to ensure ongoing quality care is provided.
- Supervises the HCA’s and other non-regulated health care staff to ensure all care provided is in accordance with the resident’s plan of care, organizational policies and procedures, continuing care health service standards, accommodation standards, and relevant legislation and regulations.
- Collaborates with the Director of Care and/or Client Care Coordinator to ensure that the resident care has been assigned to appropriate, competent nursing staff. Supervises those restricted,



activities that are supported by Golden Age Manor to be assigned to HCA’s and other non-regulated health care staff.
- Demonstrates knowledge in applying safe, competent, ethical, clinical evidence-based nursing practice, safe medication administration, and effective, timely documentation in accordance with the organizational, legislative and legal requirements.
- Participates in the development of plans, objectives and strategies for care services, which are aligned with the overall organizational strategic directions.
- Participates in the development, revision and implementation of operational policies, procedures and programs in collaboration with interdisciplinary team members and other stakeholders in accordance with evidence-based practices.
- Responds and reports all concerns and complaints from residents, families and staff to the Director of Care in accordance with the concern resolution process.
- Responds and reports all unusual incidents, medication discrepancies, and critical incidents on the assigned unit to the Director of Care.( After hours to the Alberta Health Services RN on call ) Initiates appropriate corrective action to address the immediate concern.
- Reports staff performance issues to the Director of Care in a timely manner.
- Ensures cost-effective use of resources on assigned unit.
- Promotes a safe work environment for residents, family members, co-workers and self. Reports unsafe conditions within the living and working environment. Takes required action to decrease the risk of injury immediately and/or notifies the Director of Care of the concern. Ensures investigation and follow up in respect to any unusual incidents, near misses, complaints, or reports of safety concerns.
- Represents and participates in corporate, site and external committees and professional committees as appropriate.
- Participates in performance measurement to achieve continuous quality improvement.
- Maintains an ongoing program of personal learning and attends GAM mandatory education sessions in order to maintain own competence. Seeks to benefit from opportunities for professional development and continuing education.
- Promotes educational opportunities, mentorship and leadership development for the nursing staff.
- Acts as a mentor and coach for the nursing staff.
- Actively supports, promotes and implements the values and strategic direction of GAM.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS/QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Recruitment Standards





- Licensed Practical Nurse, experience in Supportive Living is preferred.
- Current membership in good standing with CLPNA.
- Demonstrated skills in leadership, communication, teamwork, concern resolution process and customer service.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Awareness of accident and injury prevention, hazard identification and control, adherence to safe work practice and procedures is essential in this position.
- Demonstrated knowledge and commitment to person-centered care.
- Demonstrated commitment to the values of Golden Age Manor is essential in this position.
- Completed vulnerable sector check report that is dated within the last 6 months.

OCCUPATIONAL HAZARDS

The work requires occasional transporting of wheelchairs, infrequent transferring of residents, lifting boxes/supplies, pushing carts, bending and stooping at wheelchair or bedside height which may result in strains, sprains, pulls, contusions, fractures, abrasions, infections, trips, falls and musculoskeletal injury.

There is infrequent opening and closing of filing cabinets which may result in tipping cabinets, small injuries to fingers and hands, strains, sprains, abrasions or tripping

There are frequent periods of walking throughout the facility, which may result in slips, falls, strains, sprains, contusions and fractures.
