Registered Nurse / Personal Support Worker / Registered Practical Nurse / Registered Nursing Assistant - York Mills, Toronto - CAD$1,215.00/week
Description
About the Client:
We are seeking a compassionate and experienced overnight caregiver for an 89-year-old gentleman receiving palliative care at his Toronto family home. He is a determined individual who has been battling stage 4 lung cancer that has metastasized to his bones. After a successful hip replacement in January followed by a lengthy hospital stay and rehabilitation, he returned home in March where the family has created a comfortable care space on the main floor with a hospital bed, commode, and oxygen equipment. He weighs approximately 120 pounds, remains cognitively sharp and conversational, and is still ambulatory with a walker, though his mobility is gradually declining. He takes great comfort in maintaining his independence and enjoys simple pleasures like his morning coffee routine. His 84-year-old wife and supportive family have been providing round-the-clock care, but the overnight burden is becoming unsustainable.
Responsibilities:
The overnight caregiver will ensure comfort and safety throughout the night shift. This includes administering prescribed oral medications including hydromorphone (currently dispensed via oral syringe, with potential to transition to blister pack), assisting with commode use as needed, repositioning and straightening bedding for comfort, and providing reassurance and companionship during wakeful periods. A unique aspect of his care is that he finds outstanding comfort in gentle foot massage, which helps him settle back to sleep. The caregiver should be prepared to help him navigate his sheets when he becomes tangled and provide the calm, patient presence he needs during the night. Light tidying and meal reheating support may also be needed.
What We're Looking For:
We need a PSW or experienced caregiver with palliative care experience who can work independently overnight while being attentive to his needs. The ideal candidate is calm, patient, reliable, and brings positive energy while respecting his dignity and remaining independence. Experience with mobility aids, medication administration, personal care including toileting support, and comfort care techniques is essential. The caregiver must be comfortable providing hands-on personal care and have the emotional maturity to support a palliative patient and his family during this journey. English speaking required.
Schedule:
Monday through Friday, 11:00 PM to 8:00 AM (potentially 10:00 PM to 8:00 AM). Consistent overnight coverage with the same caregiver is essential for building trust and maintaining his comfort routine.
