Job Summary
We are looking to add a Licensed Electrician / PLC Programmer who will be responsible for performing preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on the facility’s electrical, electronic, automated, and control systems. The role provides specialized expertise in PLC programming, troubleshooting, diagnostics, and optimization, while maintaining and repairing electrical systems and production equipment.
The position troubleshoots complex electrical and automation issues, programs and supports PLC-controlled equipment, and performs planned and unplanned maintenance to ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of manufacturing and packaging equipment. The Licensed Electrician / PLC Programmer plays an important role in minimizing equipment downtime, improving equipment reliability, and supporting the facility’s safety, quality, productivity, and continuous improvement objectives.
Duties
- Understands and complies with all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), safety requirements, and established practices applicable to the Maintenance Department.
- Troubleshoots, diagnoses, and isolates faults in industrial electrical and electronic systems, and repairs or replaces defective components as required.
- Inspects electrical systems, equipment, and components to ensure safe operation and compliance with applicable electrical codes and regulatory requirements.
- Reads and interprets electrical drawings, blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams, equipment manuals, and other technical documentation.
- Sets up, troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains packaging and production equipment to support safe and reliable operation.
- Diagnoses electrical equipment failures and performs planned and unplanned repairs to minimize equipment downtime and production disruption.
- Uses machine drawings, equipment prints, manuals, and plant documentation to diagnose problems, complete repairs, and rebuild equipment as required.
- Lays out, assembles, installs, tests, calibrates, troubleshoots, maintains, and repairs electrical wiring, fixtures, control devices, and related equipment.
- Conducts infrared electrical inspections and identifies potential electrical issues requiring corrective action.
- Programs, monitors, and troubleshoots Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and associated control systems.
- Performs equipment recipe programming and makes adjustments as required to support production requirements.
- Installs, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs electrical motors, generators, alternators, industrial storage batteries, and electrical components associated with hydraulic and pneumatic control systems.
- Reviews and manages assigned work orders within the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), including identifying and specifying the parts and materials required to complete maintenance activities.
- Accurately documents preventive maintenance activities, inspections, repairs, and other work performed in accordance with established maintenance procedures.
- Ensures equipment maintenance histories, unplanned repairs, corrective actions,
and other relevant maintenance information are accurately and promptly recorded in the CMMS.
- Participates in root cause investigations related to equipment failures and recurring maintenance issues and supports the identification and implementation of corrective actions.
- Identifies, specifies, and orders replacement parts and materials required to complete maintenance and repair activities.
- Accurately records parts and materials used to support effective inventory control and parts availability.
- Maintains accurate equipment and maintenance records in accordance with departmental requirements.
- Supports continuous improvement initiatives focused on equipment reliability, safety, quality, productivity, and reduction of unplanned downtime.
- Performs other duties and participates in projects as assigned by the Plant Manager or designate.
Qualifications/Education/Experience
- Valid 442A Electrician licence required.
- Comprehensive knowledge of PLC programming and trouble shooting
- Valid Working at Heights/Fall Protection training required, or willingness to obtain and maintain certification as required.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Post-secondary education in Electrical Engineering Technology, Industrial Electrical Systems, Automation, or a related technical discipline is considered an asset.
- Minimum of five (5) years of relevant electrical maintenance and PLC programming experience, preferably within a packaging, manufacturing, or other industrial production environment.
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair industrial electrical and electronic systems and equipment.
- Strong working knowledge of electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, technical drawings, and equipment documentation.
- Experience working with automated manufacturing and packaging equipment is strongly preferred.
- Must be available to move to a continental shift, when required
Skills
- Troubleshooting and Problem Solving: Strong analytical and diagnostic skills with the ability to systematically identify the root cause of electrical, electronic, and equipment-related problems and implement effective solutions.
- Technical Knowledge: Strong working knowledge of industrial electrical systems, electronic controls, PLCs, motors, control circuits, sensors, instrumentation, and automated manufacturing equipment.
- Technical Drawing Interpretation: Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, blueprints, machine drawings, equipment manuals, and other technical documentation.
- Tools & Testing Equipment: Proficient in the safe and effective use of electrical diagnostic and testing equipment, including multimeters, clamp meters, insulation testers, infrared inspection equipment, and other applicable electrical tools.
- Mechanical Aptitude: Positive understanding of mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems and their interaction with electrical and automated equipment.
- Safety Awareness: Demonstrates a strong commitment to workplace safety and follows established electrical safety procedures, lockout/tagout requirements, safe work practices, and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Root Cause Analysis: Ability to participate effectively in root cause investigations, identify recurring equipment issues, and recommend corrective and preventive actions.
- Decision Making: Ability to assess equipment issues, determine appropriate corrective action, and make sound decisions while considering safety, quality, production, and equipment reliability.
- Teamwork & Collaboration: Works effectively with Maintenance, Production, Engineering, Quality,
and other departments to resolve equipment issues and support operational objectives.

- Computer Skills: Comfortable using computerized maintenance management systems to review and complete work orders, document repairs and maintenance activities, and maintain accurate equipment histories.
- Continuous Improvement: Demonstrates a proactive approach to identifying opportunities to improve equipment reliability, reduce recurring failures and downtime, and enhance maintenance effectiveness.
- Adaptability: Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced manufacturing environment and respond appropriately to changing priorities, equipment breakdowns, and operational demands.
- Independent Work: Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while recognizing when additional technical support or escalation is required.
Physical & Other Requirements
Travel:
- Travel to other Canadian facilities and/or US facilities may be required
Safety Responsibilities:
- Complies with all company safety policies as well as provincial and local regulations, with the support and guidance of Corporate SHE authorities.
- Completes all safe work permits.
- Completes risk assessment.
Physical Requirements:

- Must be physically fit to repetitively walk up and down stairs, and throughout plant
- Must be available to work the afternoon shift: 6am – 2pm (Monday – Friday)
- Must be flexible to work extended hours, up to maximum of 12 hours per day
