Building Up is Toronto’s leading registered pre-apprenticeship program and a non-profit social contractor that uses both in-class training and on-site renovations and affordable housing development as an opportunity to train and employ individuals with barriers to entering the construction sector. With a collaborative and passionate staff of 40, we support 400 trainees and alumni annually, 80% going to build full-time careers in the construction trades. Role Summary

The Insulation Installer & Supervisor is responsible for the end-to-end execution of Building Up (BU) projects, ensuring thorough preparation, efficient delivery, and a safe, organized, and inclusive work workplace. This role combines operational execution, trainee supervision, and administrative accountability, with a strong emphasis on planning discipline, communication, and coaching. Assist other Building Up divisions as needed at the managers discretion.

Required Experience & Qualifications

- 3+ years of experience working in construction, insulation, renovations, general labour, or a related field
- Previous experience supervising or leading construction crews is strongly preferred
- Comfortable working hands-on and demonstrating construction tasks when required
- Experience training, mentoring, or supervising individuals with limited construction experience is an asset
- Robust organization, planning, communication, and problem-solving skills
- Comfortable using email, spreadsheets, tablets, and basic reporting software
- Valid driver’s licence and reliable access to a vehicle
- Ability to safely perform the physical requirements of construction work, including lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling materials and equipment
- Ability to work safely in typical construction environments, including dusty conditions, varying temperatures, ladders, and active job sites, and tight spaces
- Working at Heights, WHMIS, First Aid/CPR, and other construction safety certifications are considered assets

Deliverables & Accountabilities

1. Project Preparation & Organization

- Deep understanding of project work plans and on-top of pre-project planning and preparation. This includes:
- Thoroughly examining the comprehensive details of the project work plan and developing an intricate understanding of the entire project.
- Proactively engaging with BU's lead supervisor well in advance to address any clarifying questions.
- Meticulously completing all pre-site requirements outlined in the project work plan, including:




- Initiating communication with clients/superintendents at least 24 hours before scheduled work to introduce yourself, Building Up, and the scope of work. This involves identifying and resolving any issues in the project plan that may impact the work, such as parking, elevator access, storage room availability, lunch space, etc., to ensure seamless operations.
- Ensuring all materials, supplies, and equipment are prepared well in advance of the project kick-off. This includes tasks such as printing materials, verifying the secure and functional status of iPads, and organizing the required personal protective equipment (PPE). Ideally, these preparations should be completed several days ahead of the project commencement.

2. Project Execution

- Adheres to and precisely implements project work plans while demonstrating adept problem-solving skills for typical and recurring issues.
- Promptly communicates any deviations from the project plan to the Lead Supervisor.
- Initiates each day with a toolbox talk, effectively conveying clock-in procedures, health and safety tips, daily plans, individual tasks, and targets to trainees. Utilizes the provided template for consistency.
- Manages daily workflow to achieve targets and promptly communicates any deviations to the Lead Supervisor via email, including an explanation.
- Weekly and daily reviews of Humanity to ensure an adequate number of trainees for the next day, with the right skills to meet site targets. Immediately flags any issues or concerns in the hours chat and notifies Lead Supervisors/Operations.
- Ensures the site is adequately equipped with all necessary materials, tools, and equipment for the upcoming week on a consistent basis.
- Conducts a daily wrap-up meeting at the end of each shift.
- Compulsory completion of daily reporting by the end of each day, including inventory counts, material pick-up/drop-off requests, etc.

3. Supervision - Collaborative Coaching, Constructive Feedback & Discipline

- Following BU Systems to Deliver Feedback and Collaborate on Solutions that both build confidence and hold trainees accountable to their potential.
- Fosters trainees' self-confidence and belief in themselves by delivering positive and constructive feedback on-site, following the Feedback Equation.
- Cultivates an inclusive site environment, ensuring effective communication to ensure a shared understanding of ongoing activities.
- Holds trainees accountable to their potential through the establishment of clear daily goals, transforming mistakes into valuable learning experiences, and providing daily verbal feedback.
- Demonstrates the ability to apply stricter discipline when necessary; in instances where verbal coaching proves ineffective, the candidate is proficient in the decision to send trainees home. Recognizes discipline as an integral aspect of coaching and promptly reports issues to the Accountability Coach.
- Possesses expertise in the Building Up Site Evaluation Criteria and Rubric, employing them for grading purposes.




- Regularly updates constructive feedback for five trainees (or all if less than five) weekly, adhering to the BU standard equation. Ensures that all information entered on report cards is discussed with the trainee prior to its issuance. The Feedback Equation includes elements such as "I spoke with the Trainee and let them know," positive remarks, areas for improvement, examples, and proposed solutions.
- Takes initiative in communication, being comfortable calling, emailing, and collaborating with CCMs on coaching strategies related to trainee career conversations or when trainees face challenges. For instance, proactively reaching out to a CCM to determine the best approach for addressing a trainee's work ethic.
- Effectively communicates any site incidents to the Lead Supervisor and Accountability Coach. In the case of more serious incidents, promptly sends an email to upper management detailing the incident within 24 hours.
- Ensures active engagement in Monthly Report Card Meetings with the CCM team, with the camera on.

4. Health & Safety and Organized Site/ Space - Running a protected and organized site:

- Proficient in hazard identification, ensuring strict adherence to OHSA and BU Health and Safety Policies by all on-site personnel.
- Conduct weekly assessments of Health and Safety Inventory, First Aid supplies, and additional Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Ensure adequate provisions, including cold water, electrolytes, extra breaks in heat, and warm clothing in cold conditions.
- Mandatory: Enforce the use of proper PPE; individuals without appropriate gear must be sent home.
- Mandatory: Promptly report injuries or incidents to HR & Lead Supervisor and follow established BU procedures.
- Maintain perpetual organization and cleanliness of both the site and BU vehicles.
- Ensure a well-ordered and tidy storage area when delivering materials.
- Effectively communicate the official completion of the day at the site, ensuring all trainees are informed.
- Demonstrate conflict resolution skills on-site through active listening, de-escalation techniques, and displaying compassion.
- Immediately notify the lead supervisor when BU vehicles require maintenance or an oil change. Never drop off the van with less than 10% gas.

5. Building Up Systems

- Proficient in utilizing reporting software, conducting a thorough daily review of at least one report per trainee, ideally at the start of the day. Verify the accuracy of the report with the Data Analyst before proceeding.
- Effectively communicate any tardiness or sign-in issues through the designated "hours" signal group.
- Diligently review and respond promptly to all emails, texts, and messages in the signal hours chat.
- Expertise in comprehending and adhering to Building Up Policies, with a particular focus on Respect in the Workplace, Lates and Absences, and Progressive Discipline.
