We are seeking a dependable and safety-focused Traffic Control Person (TCP) to support traffic flow through an active work zone. In addition to traditional traffic control responsibilities, this position requires the employee to operate a computerized traffic light/control system to safely manage vehicle movement. We are currently hiring for the day and evening (12 hour) shift for a two-week contract.
Responsibilities
- Operate a computerized traffic control system to control temporary traffic signals and manage the safe movement of vehicles through the work zone.
- Monitor traffic conditions continuously and adjust signal timing or traffic flow as required and as authorized.
- Use a computer, tablet, or designated control device to operate the traffic signal system accurately and safely.
- Observe approaching traffic, construction vehicles, pedestrians, workers, and changing site conditions.
- Communicate with supervisors, other Traffic Control Persons, equipment operators, and work crews using radios or other communication devices.
- Respond promptly to changing traffic conditions, equipment concerns, emergencies, or instructions from the site supervisor.
- Follow the approved traffic control plan and established site procedures at all times.
- Assist with traditional stop/slow traffic control duties when required.
- Ensure public traffic is directed safely around construction activities, equipment, and workers.
- Inspect traffic control equipment and computerized signal equipment before use and report any malfunction or damage immediately.
- Never leave the assigned traffic control position or computerized signal controls unattended unless properly relieved.
- Maintain focus and remain alert throughout the shift, including during periods of slower traffic.
- Follow all company, client, and site-specific health and safety procedures.
- Wear all required personal protective equipment (PPE).
Qualifications
- Valid Traffic Control Person certification.
- Previous Traffic Control Person or road construction experience is an asset.
- Comfortable using computers, tablets, touchscreens, or computerized equipment.
- Ability to learn and operate computerized traffic signal software and controls (on-site training will be provided).
- Strong attention to detail and ability to monitor multiple conditions at the same time.
- Good judgment and ability to react quickly to changing traffic or worksite conditions.
- Strong verbal communication skills.
- Ability to follow detailed instructions and traffic control plans.
- Dependable, punctual, and able to work independently for extended periods.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to stand for extended periods and perform regular traffic control duties as required.
