The Speech-Language Pathologist is part of the community health care team, striving to provide accessible and culturally relevant services to clients of all ages in a variety of settings. A casual Speech-Language Pathologist position is available. This position is based in Rankin Inlet, Nunavut with regular travel to the surrounding communities to provide community-based services. Telerehabilitation services are also provided between community visits from Rankin Inlet. Here is your chance to work with a dynamic team of healthcare professionals in Canada's Arctic.

Qualifications

MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING REQUIRED:

- A Master’s Degree in Speech Language Pathology
- Current registration to practice as a Speech Language Pathologist with good standing in any one province or territory.
- Certification with the Speech-Language and Audiologists Canada (SAC) or eligible for certification.

EXPERIENCE:

- Experience with preschool and school age children is required.
- General clinical experience of two or more years is preferred.
- Experience writing and drafting own reports is preferred.
- Demonstrated leadership/supervisory experience preferred.
- An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

- Effective communication skills, oral and written are required.
- Understanding of the health care system and health care practices is required.
- Time management, organizational and problem solving skills are required.
- Excellent interpersonal skills are required.
- Must have a well developed understanding of professional responsibility and confidentiality is required.
- Computer literacy is required.
- Must be able to work as a team member but with limited supervision and therefore must be self-directed and able to prioritize own work is required.
- A satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.

OTHER JOB-RELATED DUTIES:





- Experience in program development is preferred.
- Cross cultural awareness and experience is preferred.
- Electronic health records experience is preferred.
- Inuktitut Language proficiency an asset.

Key responsibilities

CLIENT CARE

- Provide accurate clinical assessment to diagnose language and communication disorders by using and interpreting a variety of standardized assessment tools.
- Implement and evaluate appropriate interventions for individual clients to support clients in achieving their maximum potential in language and communication.
- Help the client and/or family understand the disorder and work with them to develop appropriate goals for therapy, implements therapy plan.

PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT

- Develop program plans for individual clients and groups that will be implemented in a school, pre-school or home setting. Works with educators, support staff and other health professionals to demonstrate how program plans will be used in the school, daycare or home setting.
- Develop new Speech Language programs to address the needs of Kivalliq residents in cooperation with the Medical Rehab Coordinator, the School of Medical Rehabilitation and the director of the Northern Medical Unit.

EDUCATION

- Provide ongoing community education and health promotion by: developing client handout material and public education material on language and communication development and disorders; providing ongoing education to a variety of individuals and groups about language and communication development, stimulation and disorders and the role of the speech language pathologist; providing education to clients, families and other caregivers on how to carry out treatment recommendations; providing clinical teaching or lecturing to other groups as required.
- Participate in Educational Activities by: teaching,



supervising and evaluating medical rehabilitation students and community therapy assistants; teaching other health care providers through formal and informal sessions in various facility and community settings; providing public education through teaching sessions and/or public media as requested; acting as a resource to the health care team.
- Maintain professional competence by keeping abreast of current practices and therapies to contribute to achieving the best outcomes for clients.

MANAGEMENT

- Contribute to the management of the department by: supervising the work of community therapy assistants; making recommendations for Capital Budget needs to the Therapy Services Team Leader, collaborating in the development and achievement of departmental goals and objectives; and, collecting and analyzing workload statistics to ensure appropriate program direction.
- Maintains written procedures, indexes, logs and records for activities within the area of responsibility. Maintains appropriate file systems and records with guides and indexes, including computer records, back-up files, etc.

OTHER

- Performs other related duties as determined by Therapy Services Team Leader and the Director of Medical Rehabilitation Programs.
- May be required to perform related duties not exceeding skills and capabilities as required.
