Sous Chef - Miijidaa Cafe + Bistro

Guelph, ON | Full-Time or Part-Time | $20–$23/hour + Team Share

Miijidaa Cafe + Bistro is part of the Neighbourhood Group of Companies, a Certified B Corporation with more than 30 years serving Guelph and Kitchener. We source 80%+ of our food and beverage from Ontario producers. Local isn’t a marketing word here — it’s how we actually cook.

We’re looking for a Sous Chef who is serious about their craft and want to be part of a kitchen that gives a damn about the food.

If you’re here to collect a paycheque and move on, this probably isn’t the place. If you want to cook with real ingredients, grow your skills, and work alongside people who care — keep reading.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING

- Lead from the line — working alongside the culinary team during prep and service
- Support the Chef with the day-to-day operation of the Heart of House
- Help lead smooth, organized, and well-paced services while maintaining quality and consistency
- Ensure dishes are prepared and presented according to Miijidaa recipes and standards
- Coach, train, and develop cooks while helping build a kitchen culture based on teamwork, accountability, and respect
- Support ordering, receiving, inventory, prep planning, and product rotation
- Monitor food quality, portioning, waste, and food costs
- Help maintain appropriate prep levels and ensure stations are set up for successful service
- Uphold food safety, sanitation, HACCP, and workplace health and safety standards
- Maintain a clean, organized, and professional kitchen
- Communicate closely with Front of House leadership to keep service connected and running smoothly
- Support menu development, features,

and the execution of seasonal dishes
- Step into leadership when the Chef is away and provide explicit direction to the Heart of House team
- Lead by example — the standards you expect from your team should be visible in how you cook, communicate, and work every day

WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR

- 3+ years of professional cooking experience in a full-service restaurant
- Previous Sous Chef, Chef de Partie, Senior Line Cook, or kitchen leadership experience
- Strong culinary fundamentals, knife skills, cooking techniques, and ability to execute consistently under pressure
- Someone who still loves being on the line — this is a hands-on cooking position, not a desk job
- Strong understanding of kitchen operations, prep systems, inventory, food costs, waste control, and food safety
- A genuine passion for food, seasonal cooking, and working with ingredients from Ontario farmers and producers
- A leader who can coach people, set expectations, and hold the team accountable while maintaining a respectful workplace
- Organized, dependable, and able to anticipate what the kitchen needs before it becomes a problem
- Calm under pressure and able to help keep the team focused during busy services
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills
- Food Handler Certification required

- Red Seal certification or apprenticeship experience is a strong asset
- Availability to work a adaptable culinary leadership schedule, including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays

EARNINGS & PERKS

- $20.00–$23.00 per hour, base wage, based on experience
- Team Share paid bi-weekly — gratuities are funded directly by guests and distributed to eligible kitchen team members (amounts vary based on sales and seasonality)
- Health & dental benefits available after 3 months
- Employee Assistance Program — 24/7 confidential support
- Employee Relief Fund — internal support for unexpected life challenges
- Team dining discounts across all Neighbourhood Group restaurants
- Real growth opportunities — clear pathways across five NGC concepts
