SOLAR LEAD, TRAVELLING CREW
Location: Kitchener, Ontario (on-site) for training, then project sites across Ontario
Salary Range: $35 - $39 per hour, depending on qualifications and previous work experience
Per Diem: $69 per day, plus board and travel to site paid by VCT
Term: 6 months local training, then a 2.5 year travel commitment
Type: Permanent, full-time
Reports To: Construction Supervisor
OVERVIEW
At VCT Group we're building the future of solar architecture and electrification. Over the past decade we've partnered with clients to design, build, and maintain over 300 solar projects, generating more than 20 million kWh of clean energy annually and reducing CO₂ emissions by over 3,000 tonnes each year.
We're not just chasing trends, we're leading them. We transform underutilized space with custom solar carports, build out EV charging infrastructure, and integrate energy storage. We also co-founded CED Co-op, Canada's first public co-operative investment vehicle for clean energy, which has raised $20 million from 750+ members to build a $45M+ renewable portfolio.
A Solar Lead is the person who owns the site. You run the crew, set the pace, hold the quality line, and make the dozens of small calls a day that decide whether a job goes smoothly or sideways. On the travelling crew you do all of that with more distance between you and head office, which means more autonomy and more trust. We are hiring a Solar Lead to run our travelling crew across Ontario.
THE TRAVEL COMMITMENT
This is a travelling position, and the commitment is the heart of the role. Please read this section carefully before you apply.
- Six months of paid local training out of our Kitchener shop, working alongside our Waterloo Region crews and learning the VCT way of building.
- Expect some out of town work during the training period as well, usually a couple of weeks at a time. It is short-term travel, not the long-term commitment that starts after training.
- After training, a 2 year deployment to VCT project sites across Ontario, outside daily commuting range of Kitchener.
- You are based at project locations for the full 2 years. This is not a rotational position and there is no local posting to come back to partway through.
You need to be certain you can commit to the full term before you apply.
- VCT pays for your board and your travel to and from site. On top of your hourly rate you receive a per diem of $69 per day.
- You are welcome to travel home on your own vacation time, and we will work with you to schedule it around project milestones.
- At the end of the 2 years the choice is yours: extend with the travel crew, or move into a local position in Waterloo Region.
If you are not in a position to be away for the full term, we would rather you applied for the local Electrician posting instead. Both roles matter to us and there is no wrong answer.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Lead a travelling crew of technicians and apprentices through the mechanical and electrical installation of solar PV systems.
- Run the daily plan on site: sequencing, labour, materials, equipment, and access
- Own quality on your site, including layout verification, torque and fastening standards, and workmanship inspections before close-out
- Run daily meetings and hold the crew to VCT and Ontario health and safety requirements
- Be the day to day point of contact for the customer, the general contractor, and other trades on site
- Make sound calls independently when the Construction Supervisor is hours away, and escalate the ones that warrant it
- Coordinate mobilization and demobilization, including accommodations logistics, tooling, and material staging in a recent community
- Track and report progress, hours, materials used, and site issues
- Look after the crew away from home, including morale, and flag issues early
- Coach and develop technicians and apprentices, and give honest feedback on how they are doing
WHAT YOU BRING
- Five or more years in the construction industry, with time spent leading crews or running sites
- Hands-on solar PV installation experience
- The ability to commit to the full 2 year travel term
- The judgement to run a site with limited oversight, and the honesty to escalate what needs escalating
- Strong organization and the ability to keep several trades and moving parts straight at once
- Excellent teamwork and communication skills, and the temperament to lead a small crew that lives and works together
- Current G class driver's license
- Working at heights and first aid/CPR certification, or the willingness to obtain them promptly
- Forklift, boom lift, or telehandler certification and experience
- Experience reading and marking up shop drawings and single line diagrams
- Comfort with project management software, databases, CRM platforms, and MS Office
Bonus If You Also Have
- 309A or 442A Electrician License
- Experience with EV chargers and energy storage systems
- Previous experience on travelling, or remote construction crews
You'll Fit Right In If You
- Have a high attention to detail and take pride in quality workmanship
- Think critically and constantly look for ways to improve the status quo
- Quietly compete with yourself to be the best at what you do
- Care about sustainability and look forward to driving an EV
- Feel proud standing back at the end of a job and saying, “I built that.”
- Get satisfaction out of a crew that got better because you led it, wherever you happened to be
