Your Prospect:

The nature of the clinic is one that specializes in forensic mental health care. Focus is on mental health stability and wellness encompassing factors that focus on the client’s involvement with the legal/justice systems and the evaluation and reduction of risk that the client presents to themselves as well as that of the general public in the context of their offending behaviors. The RN/RPN will be responsible for providing community-based clinical forensic risk reduction focused assessment and treatment services in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team. Assessment may include but is not limited to assessment of current mental functioning, substance use & treatment follow up needs, financial, housing and social functioning, health and medication management needs of clients. Primary treatment services will be delivered within the context of a forensic community mental health clinic environment to a wide range of complex justice involved clients who are at various points along the spectrum of offense severity. Assessment and treatment services are provided to individuals who may be already convicted or awaiting sentencing disposition under the criminal code of Canada. The RN/RPN will, as part of the team, participate in student supervision, staff development, service planning, quality improvement and evaluation and/or research activities as identified. The RN/RPN will work effectively in an interdisciplinary setting and act as a liaison and program ambassador of forensic services.



Work will be performed with a high degree of independence within broad guidelines, in accordance with program and professional standards of practice and the codes of conduct of Recovery Alberta and the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta/College of Registered Nurses of Alberta.

Description:

As a Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN), you will provide leadership through a wide variety of nursing services to patients (clients, residents) for the purpose of promoting, maintaining or restoring health, mental health and preventing mental illness, injury and disability. You will teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and take necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care, while reflecting the shared vision and values of Recovery Alberta.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited Psychiatric nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta (CRPNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Additional Required Qualifications:

Minimum 3-5 years’ experience in an acute general mental health setting. Minimum 3 years’ experience working with individuals who are experiencing mental health and addiction related problems in a community setting. Solid interpersonal communication skills, interviewing techniques and writing skills, in depth knowledge of mental health /mental illness. Knowledge of and use of risk assessment measures (i.e. Suicide). Working knowledge of the mental health act and CTO legislation, working knowledge of forensic and correctional systems, demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team setting. Active full registration with CRNA/CRPNA.

Preferred Qualifications:

Community mental health experience preferred, given the complex nature of the client population served. Experience working with a forensic mental health population preferred. Knowledge of/use of Forensic Risk assessment measures preferred. Working knowledge of the mental health act and CTO legislation community forensic experience preferred. Use of Motivational Interviewing techniques & experience/knowledge of CBT, DBT therapies an asset. Current NVCI preferred.
