About Us

Western University's Student Emergency Response Team (SERT) is a student-run volunteer organization that provides emergency medical response to 9-1-1 calls across campus. Operating since 1989, SERT responds to on-campus medical emergencies through the Western Special Constable Service (WSCS), with members provide care in three person co-ed response teams.

During the academic year, SERT provides 24/7 coverage. As a proud member of the Association of Campus Emergency Response Teams of Canada (ACERT), SERT is committed to delivering high-quality emergency medical care while fostering leadership, teamwork and professional development among its members.

SERT's success is made possible through the dedication of its volunteers and alumni and the ongoing support of Student Health and Wellness Services, its parent organization and primary benefactor. Through this partnership, SERT continues to play a vital role in supporting the health, safety and well-being of the Western University community.

Responsibilities

*INTERNAL POSTING - FOR CURRENT SERT MEMBERS ONLY*

The Instructor plays an important role in supporting SERT's training and education programs by delivering Canadian Red Cross Standard Frist Aid and CPR Level C courses to members of the Western University community. This position is responsible for preparing and facilitating training sessions, evaluating participant competency and ensuring courses are delivered in accordance with Canadian Red Cross Standards.

As a representative of SERT, the Instructor helps promote emergency preparedness and community safety while creating a positive, engaging and inclusive learning environment for participants.

Key Responsibilities





- Deliver Standard First Aid and CPR Level C courses in accordance with Canadian Red Cross instructional standards
- Facilitate both classroom and practical learning activities that promote participant engagement and skill development
- Demonstrate and evaluate first aid and CPR skills, ensuring participants meet certification requirements
- Provide coaching, guidance and constructive feedback to support participant learning and confidence
- Create a safe, inclusive and supportive learning environment that accommodates diverse learning needs
- Prepare and maintain course materials, supplies and training equipment
- Complete all required attendance records, course documentation and certification reporting
- Respond professionally to participant questions and concerns
- Promote injury prevention, emergency preparedness and community health and safety
- Maintain current knowledge of Canadian Red Cross policies, procedures and best practices
- Participate in instructor meetings, professional development opportunities and training initiatives to support the ongoing success of SERT's educational programs

Qualifications

Required:

- Active SERT member in valuable standing
- Current Canadian Red Cross Standard Frist Aid Instructor Certification
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR Level C Certification

Assets:

- Previous experience teaching, coaching, mentoring, or facilitating learning activities
- Experience delivering first aid, CPR or health-related training programs

Skills, Abilities & Expertise:

- Strong understanding of Canadian Red Cross Standard First Aid and CPR standards
- Ability to engage diverse groups of learners and adapt instructional approaches as required
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail




- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of the SERT team
- Commitment to promoting safety, emergency preparedness and community well-being
