Calworx Projects Ltd. has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Automation & Controls Engineer to join our team. Reporting to the Automation Manager, the successful candidate will work within our multidisciplinary projects team and take technical ownership of Controls and Automation scopes throughout the project lifecycle, while ultimately delivering an exceptional client experience.

Position Overview and Responsibilities:

This is a full time position based at the Calworx Projects head office in Calgary, with periodic travel to customer facilities throughout Western Canada. As a Senior Controls Engineer, you will provide technical leadership for automation and control system projects throughout the complete project lifecycle, from preliminary design and engineering through implementation, testing, commissioning, and startup.

This role is broader than PLC or HMI programming. While you will be expected to understand control system software and be capable of reviewing, troubleshooting, and contributing to programming when required, your primary responsibility will be to translate process and project requirements into a complete, technically sound controls solution and lead others through its execution.

You will work closely with Project Managers, Automation Specialists / Programmers, Electrical and Instrumentation Engineers and Designers, clients, vendors, and field personnel. You will be expected to understand the overall project scope, identify and define the automation work required, break that work into executable tasks, provide clear technical direction to team members, and review completed work for technical accuracy and consistency.

A successful candidate will be comfortable moving between detailed technical work and higher-level engineering decisions. You may spend one day developing a control narrative or shutdown key, another reviewing PLC logic with a programmer, and another working directly with a client to resolve a commissioning issue. We are looking for someone who is technically sharp, detail-oriented, adaptable, and interested in continually expanding the breadth of their responsibilities.

Your day-to-day responsibilities may include:

- Lead the controls and automation scope on multidisciplinary engineering projects and act as a technical point of contact for project teams and clients.
- Review process, mechanical, electrical and instrumentation information and translate project requirements into clear automation requirements and deliverables.
- Develop concise and technically accurate Control Narratives, Shutdown Keys, Cause & Effect matrices, I/O Lists, SCADA/HMI documentation, control philosophies, testing documentation, technical reports, and other automation engineering documents.
- Define automation work packages, establish technical requirements, and delegate programming, HMI development, testing, and documentation activities to appropriate team members.
- Provide technical direction and mentorship to Automation Programmers and junior/intermediate team members while maintaining accountability for the overall controls solution.
- Review PLC, DCS, HMI and SCADA applications to confirm that the implemented software accurately reflects the engineering and process design intent.
- Perform programming, configuration, troubleshooting, or software modifications when appropriate, without programming being the primary focus of the position.
- Coordinate controls requirements and interfaces with Electrical, Instrumentation, Mechanical, Process and Project Management disciplines.




- Engineer and select control system hardware, network architecture and automation equipment in collaboration with clients, vendors and other engineering disciplines.
- Lead or support panel testing, Software Acceptance Testing (SWAT/SAT), Factory Acceptance Testing, commissioning and startup activities.
- Perform technical reviews and QA/QC of automation deliverables and authenticate engineering documents within your area of professional responsibility.
- Identify technical risks, scope gaps and interface issues early and communicate them clearly to Project Managers, clients and the project team.
- Support troubleshooting and resolution of complex control system issues remotely and at customer facilities.
- Take ownership of unfamiliar technical challenges, identify what information or expertise is required, and work collaboratively with internal and external SMEs to develop an appropriate solution.
- Periodically travel to industrial facilities throughout Western Canada, either independently or as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Position Requirements:

- Bachelor's degree or Technologist Diploma in Electrical, Controls, Automation or a related Engineering discipline.
- Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or licensed professional (P.L.(Eng.)) with APEGA, or eligible for registration in Alberta in the near term, with the ability to authenticate engineering work within their area of competency.
- Demonstrated experience developing and reviewing industrial automation and controls engineering deliverables.
- Strong working knowledge of PLC-based control systems and the ability to read, understand, review and troubleshoot control logic. Expert-level programming specialization is not required.
- Ability to understand an overall project scope, identify the controls requirements and interfaces, and translate them into transparent tasks and deliverables for other team members.
- Experience developing technical automation documentation such as Control Narratives, Shutdown Keys, Cause & Effect matrices, I/O Lists, control philosophies and testing documentation.
- Strong understanding of industrial instrumentation, control systems, networking and interfaces between PLC, DCS, SCADA/HMI and field equipment.
- Experience with one or more major industrial control platforms such as Rockwell Automation, Schneider Electric, Emerson DeltaV, Rockwell PlantPAx or Inductive Automation Ignition.
- Strong technical writing skills and the ability to communicate complex control concepts clearly and concisely.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with clients, project managers, programmers, designers, engineers, vendors and field personnel.
- Ability to manage multiple concurrent priorities and remain effective through periods of changing workload, field demands and project deadlines.
- Willingness to travel periodically to client facilities throughout Canada, typically with reasonable advance notice and generally for periods of up to two weeks.

Credentials that will set you apart:

- Functional Safety / SIS training or certification.
- Vendor certifications in any of the following; Rockwell Automation, Schneider Electric, Emerson DeltaV, Ignition or other industrial automation platforms.
- Hands-on commissioning,



startup and troubleshooting experience in operating industrial facilities.
- Previous experience with an engineering consultant or systems integrator, particularly in a multidisciplinary project environment.
- Experience leading automation work packages or providing technical direction to programmers, designers or junior engineers.
- Experience with control system migrations, brownfield modifications and integration with existing operating facilities.
- Working knowledge of industrial communications and networking, including Modbus TCP, Ethernet/IP, OPC UA and related protocols.
- Experience with alarm management, shutdown systems, sequence control, process control and safety-related automation.
- Broad understanding of instrumentation, electrical systems and industrial processes beyond control system software.
- Evidence of continued professional development outside formal education.
- A demonstrated interest in taking on unfamiliar problems, learning new technologies and progressively expanding technical responsibility.
