Job Summary
Schedule “A” – Job Duties
Subject to the continuing discretion of Management of Guelph Montessori School, the Cook shall:
1. Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Plans, prepares, and serves attractive and nutritionally balanced meals for the children, promoting and reinforcing good nutritional habits; trying new foods, portion control and balanced diet.
- Unserved perishable food must be promptly covered and refrigerated or frozen immediately. All food must be labelled with ingredients, cooking directions and date stored. Food received from outside deliveries must also be labelled.
- Foods returning to the kitchen mist be thrown out and not saved or to be reserved to any of the children.
- Ensure that daily food log is filled out before food is served: fruit/vegetable of the day and food temperatures.
- Prepare grocery list weekly or bi-weekly as needed. Please ensure you look in cupboards before ordering supplies.
- Advance planning of lunch menus and snacks in accordance with the Canada Food Guide; posting of menus for parents and staff
- Plan a 4-week menu rotation ensuring adequate variety, adherence to allergy/diet restrictions of children and ensuring that all preparation is peanut/nut free.
- Check children’s allergy and dietary restrictions list before preparing each meal. Record all food substitutions and menu changes as per criteria. Ensure that names of children or groups are posted for each change. Any child who requires different foods must have their plate or cup labelled with the child’s name on it.
- All foods being transported to the classrooms must be kept covered.
- Maintain a thoroughly clean and disinfected kitchen, inside and out, including but not limited to the following: cupboards, food containers, counters, fridge, freezer, stove, dishwasher, microwave, toaster, walls, fans and floors.
- Ensure that dishwasher is in proper working order and that dishes are done according to Wellington-Dufferin Guelph Public Health
- Defrost all freezers on a regular schedule
- Deliver and collect lunch/snack tray to/from all on site programs
Complete clean up after each meal (i.e. dishes, countertops, etc.)
- Meets with Health Inspector as required to ensure kitchen and practices are in compliance with City’s health code.
- Regular inventory of kitchen equipment and supplies
- Wearing proper cooking attire (e. apron, hair net, gloves, etc.)
- Using proper dishwashing methods
- Ensuring that all kitchen and cooking related areas and equipment are clean and in good working order at all times.
- Cleaning kitchen areas after each meal is served
2. Ordering/Purchasing
- Purchase all groceries in order to implement the planned menus, in consideration of the center's food budget and in consultation with the center supervisor
- Unpacking and checking of orders
- Follow established procedures regarding forwarding of all receipts related to purchases

Program Support
- Establish and maintain open communication with parents regarding children’s dietary restrictions, allergies, etc.
- Assist in administration of first aid, as required
- Participate in fire drills and other emergency procedures as necessary
- Assist in the child care programs as required by the supervisor in order to enhance or maintain child-staff ratios
- Actively participate in meetings (contribute to discussions, share learning experiences, etc.) and events as required e.g. staff meetings, etc…
- Engages and works collaboratively as a team member in caring for the children and overall operation of the program; maintains regular and open communication with peers and all other co-workers
- Maintains positive relationships with colleagues, children and families, school personnel, management, and community members.
- Guelph Montessori School is open during the hours of 7:30a.m.-5:30p.m., Monday – Friday. While every attempt is made for staff to have regular schedules and programs, the nature of the job requires staff to be flexible about shifts and program assignments. Summer, March Break, Winter Holidays, PA days etc, will affect staff schedules and job responsibilities.
- Read Log book before starting shift and read and update the room log book daily.
- Create a welcoming environment for parents and their children; greet parents, develop a rapport with them, discuss the programs and daily events with them
4. Other
- Attend staff/program meetings as required
- Attend professional development and other relevant training opportunities when available, e.g. in order to remain current with respect to Health Department regulations on proper food handling, etc…
- Other duties; participation in special events as assigned by management
- Assist the management in maintaining a safe and healthy work environment by promptly reporting any existing and/or potential workplace hazards
*Attend to the children’s physical needs for diapering, toileting, eating and sleeping as promptly as possible.
- The ability to relate well to children, staff and parents is essential
- Release children ONLY to person’s authorized by the child’s custodial parent/guardian/caregiver and fill out Child Release Forms, as necessary.
- Report all incidences of suspected child abuse to the Supervisor and follow Guelph Montessori School procedure and government legislation.
- Follow Guelph Montessori School procedures for maintaining the health records and administering medication and first aid.
- Report all accidents, injuries and illnesses to the Supervisor or designate to record such incidents in the daily log book including serious occurrences.
- Stay on duty until shift is over. Two staff (one of whom must be an RECE) must stay on premise until the last child is picked up.
- Remain professional at all times. This includes, but is not limited to, refraining from gossiping about parents, children or other staff; limiting socializing when you are on duty: limiting personal phone calls; and respecting personal boundaries.
- Follows the dress code and is well groomed and wear appropriate clean attire for the profession.
- Develop and maintain professional relationships with families by providing ongoing support and resources

Educational Requirements
- Valid Food Handler Safety Certificate
- Valid Driver’s License & Reliable vehicle
- Current First Aid & CPR Level C
- Vulnerable Sector Criminal Reference Check to be completed every 5 years, to sign a declaration form annually.
Qualifications
- Experience as a cook in a child care setting (a minimum of 2 years)
- Familiarity with planning and implementing menus set out by the Canada Food Guide, Public Health Guidelines and Toronto Operating Criteria
Physical Requirements
- Repetitive Tasks
- Frequent combinations of sitting, climbing, standing, walking, balancing, bending, crouching, kneeling, and crawling.
- Combination of indoor and outdoor environments
- Exposure to; high noise levels, bodily fluids, infectious illness/diseases, occasional inclement weather
Skilled Obligations
- Adhere to the legislative regulations and duties set out for an Early Childhood Educator under the current Child Care and Early Years Act.
- Adherence to the Professional Responsibilities and Code of Conduct set out by the Ontario College of Early Childhood Educators, including but not limited to the Conflict of Interest Policy and Confidentiality Policy.
- Valid Standard First Aid Training and Level “C” CPR
- Knowledge of the Child Care Early Years Act, How Does Learning Happen, ELECT document, Occupational Health and Safety Act, AODAS and Public Health guidelines.
§ Vulnerable Sector Criminal Reference Check to be completed every 5 years, to sign a declaration form annually.
Educational Requirements:
- Current First Aid & CPR Level C
Other responsibilities, duties, and/or tasks may be assigned by the Supervisor from time to time as required based on the needs of the organization.
The job duties may change as new policies and procedures are updated to reflect industry standards.
Pay: $19.00-$21.00 per hour
