Overview

This position provides supervision and coaching to patrons in the fitness facility regarding the protected use of weights, cardio, and fitness equipment. The incumbent orients patrons to the fitness centre and related areas, develops basic resistance training programs, provides some coaching or advice specific to weight training, responds to incidents, first aid emergencies, and patrons' inquiries, promotes interest and participation in fitness activities, and ensures that equipment is properly maintained. While most duties are performed within established program guidelines, some independent action and initiative will be needed, provided said actions fall within the limits of applicable policies and procedures, referring any difficult or unusual problems to a Supervisor.

Examples of key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

- Demonstrates and leads individuals or small groups on the proper use of weight, cardio and fitness equipment; communicates procedures and facility etiquette to patrons. Screens customers to assess physical activity readiness and fitness level, ensures safety of the environment and patrons by ensuring equipment is in good working order and facility is clean and clear of tripping hazards, and promotes organizational campaigns and initiatives as required.
- Delivers fitness centre orientations, responds to questions and complaints, provides fitness advice within the scope of their certification, and designs and delivers basic resistance training programs.
- Assists with set-up and tear down of group fitness classes when needed and carries out general cleaning duties.
- Performs diagnostics for equipment maintenance, provides minor equipment repairs and reports major repairs to supervisor,



and assists with the removal of broken or damaged equipment.
- Conducts periodic pass checks to ensure patrons using the facility are eligible to do so. Accurately records and reports attendance in the fitness facility.
- Prepares and maintains a variety of records including: inventory, equipment maintenance schedules and requisitions, first aid and incident reports, and availability forms. Attends team meetings, continuing education sessions, and fitness team events as requested. Recommends purchase of supplies or equipment to their Supervisor.
- Provides First-Aid treatment within their scope of practice, treats minor injuries, makes necessary arrangements for treatment for major injuries, and completes first aid/incident report forms; notifies Supervisor as required.
- Enforces general rules of conduct, including facility guidelines, relevant city and departmental policies and procedures, etiquette, and proper attire. Maintains control and discipline of unruly patrons as required.
- Opens and secures fitness facilities and other related spaces; locks up as required.
- Performs other duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

- Sound knowledge of the principles, practices, and objectives of individual weight training and fitness programs and of the various types of weight training equipment.
- Sound knowledge of current anatomy, physiology, exercise science, and methods of practice.
- Sound knowledge of applicable policies, safety regulations, and rules governing the work performed.
- Working knowledge of fitness equipment machines and ability to do diagnostics and minor repairs.
- Ability to asses individuals' physical activity readiness, develop basic individual weight training programs, and provide advice, guidance, and referral services relative to health and fitness.




- Ability to deal tactfully and diplomatically with a variety of patrons and colleagues.
- Ability to assist in the preparation and maintenance of correspondence, records and reports, as directed by supervisor.
- Ability to present ideas and viewpoints effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ability to carry out basic computer skills.
- Must possess the physical capabilities and stamina to carry out the duties of the position.
- Must keep all applicable certifications and registrations in good standing.
- Other related duties as assigned, which may vary according to the facility.

Qualifications and Experience:

- Completion of high school diploma (Grade 12 or equivalent).
- Previous work or volunteer experience in a customer-service oriented position.
- Completion of BCRPA Weight Training designation or equivalent.
- Valid Emergency First Aid or Standard First Aid Certificate from a recognized provider as listed on the BCRPA site (must maintain throughout employment).
- Valid CPR Level A or C and AED Certification from a recognized provider as listed on the BCRPA site (must maintain throughout employment).
- Ability to successfully clear a Police Information Check.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience:

- Post-secondary degree/diploma in a related field such as Human Kinetics or Kinesiology.
- Six (6) months of related experience, including working or volunteering in a fitness facility.
- Additional BCRPA Registration (Group Fitness, Aquatic Fitness, Personal Training, Yoga, Pilates, Older Adult etc.).
- Knowledge of second language is an asset.

Working Conditions:

Duties are performed in a busy environment. May encounter a variety of customers and/or challenging situations. May be required to move equipment for set-up and take-down as required for programs.

These are auxiliary positions that will involve variable hours. Flexibility and willingness to work a variety of shifts including days, evenings and weekends is required.
