Job Summary
Athabasca Tribal Council is seeking a dedicated and approachable human resources professional to join our team as a Human Resources Generalist. Reporting to the Director of Human Resources, this position supports a broad range of HR functions, including recruitment, onboarding and offboarding, employee relations, benefits administration, learning and development, performance management, and policy implementation. Working collaboratively within an Indigenous organization, the Human Resources Generalist helps foster a respectful and positive workplace while supporting the consistent application of organizational policies and employment legislation.
The ideal candidate is organized, detail-oriented, and committed to professionalism, discretion, confidentiality, and culturally respectful practices.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Coordinate the full-cycle recruitment process, including reviewing and updating job descriptions, posting vacancies, screening applications, conducting telephone interviews, coordinating and participating in interviews and completing reference checks.
- Collaborate with hiring managers and the Director of Human Resources to coordinate onboarding and orientation, providing current employees with a welcoming and supportive introduction to the organization.
- Build and maintain relationships with First Nations communities to promote employment opportunities, attract qualified candidates, and strengthen community connections.
- Maintain accurate, confidential, and comprehensive employee records and HR information systems in accordance with organizational policies, legislative requirements, and records management standards.
- Administer employee benefits, respond to employee inquiries, coordinate enrolments and changes, and facilitate information sessions to enhance employee understanding of available programs.
- Provide guidance to employees on HR policies, procedures, benefits, leaves, performance management, workplace expectations, and other employment related matters, escalating complex concerns to the Director of Human Resources as appropriate.
- Coordinate the preparation, organization, and maintenance of HR forms, reports, records, and employee communications.
- Respond to internal and external HR inquiries from employees, leaders, candidates, service providers, and other stakeholders in a timely, professional, and confidential manner.
- Support managers and employees throughout the performance management cycle, including coordinating probationary, mid-year, and annual performance reviews and monitoring completion.
- Support consistent application of organizational policies and employment practices while helping ensure compliance with applicable legislation, including the Alberta Employment Standards Code and Alberta Human Rights Act.
- Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned to support organizational activities.
Qualifications
- Diploma or degree in human resources, business administration, or related field.
- 3+ years of similar and progressive work experience in a human resource generalist role.
- Knowledge of and solid understanding of Alberta Employment Standards legislation and human resources best practices.
- Experience working in and with First Nations communities, including knowledge of First Nations culture, traditions and values is an asset.
- Strong organization, communication (verbal and written), presentation and people skills.
- Impeccable attention to detail, with a steady deliberate approach in task execution and time management skills.
- Ability to exercise discretion, professionalism, and confidentiality.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse teams across the organization.
- Proficient in MS Office and experience with HRIS systems considered an asset.
Qualifications
- Diploma or degree in human resources, business administration, or related field.
- Minimum of three (3) years of progressive human resources across a broad range of human resources functions.
- Strong knowledge of Alberta Employment Standards legislation and human resources best practices.
- Experience working with First Nations communities, knowledge of cultures,
traditions, and values, including Cree and/or Dene languages are strong assets.
- Demonstrated commitment to culturally safe, respectful, and inclusive service delivery.
- Strong organizational, interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse teams across the organization.
- Excellent attention to detail, ability to manage multiple priorities, complete work accurately and within established timelines.
- Demonstrated professionalism, sound judgment, discretion, and commitment to maintaining confidentiality.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office; experience working with Human Resources Information Systems is considered an asset.
Requirements:
- Clear Intervention Record Check.
- Class 5 Driver’s License and clear Drivers Abstract.
- Occasional travel to field locations may be required.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends based on organizational needs.
