Overview:
We are looking for an experienced Journeyman Welder / Fabricator to join our steel fabrication operation. This is a hands-on position working under the direction of our current Welding/Fabrication Supervisor, while also being expected to work independently and complete assigned fabrication work with minimal day-to-day supervision.
The successful candidate must be comfortable taking a fabrication scope from a shop drawing through to a finished product, including material preparation, layout, cutting, fitting, welding, finishing, and shop priming. This position is best suited for someone who is dependable, versatile, takes ownership of their work, and is willing to assist other construction operations when fabrication-shop workload is lighter.
For the right candidate, this position is intended to develop into a Working Shop Supervisor role. As the individual becomes familiar with our operations, projects, and fabrication requirements, they will be expected to take on increasing responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the fabrication shop while remaining actively involved in hands-on fabrication work.
Our fabrication operation is expected to expand to include sheet-metal flashing fabrication for our cladding and building-envelope operations. This role will evolve as the shop expands to include flashing fabrication and related sheet-metal work.
Key Responsibilities
- Read and interpret shop drawings, fabrication drawings, details, and material lists.
- Lay out, measure, cut, drill, grind, fit, and prepare structural and miscellaneous steel components.
- Fabricate steel assemblies in accordance with approved shop drawings and project requirements.
- Perform welding using appropriate welding processes, procedures, and equipment.
- Check dimensions, fit-up, alignment, and general quality of fabricated assemblies.
- Grind, clean, prepare, and shop-prime completed steel components as required.
- Operate forklifts and other approved material-handling equipment to receive, move, organize, and load steel and fabricated materials.
- Maintain an organized, productive, and safe fabrication work area.
- Coordinate daily fabrication activities with the Welding/Fabrication Supervisor and communicate material, drawing, equipment, or fabrication issues as they arise.
- Work independently on assigned fabrication tasks while following company procedures, drawings, and supervisor direction.
- Assist other company construction divisions when fabrication-shop workload is limited.
- As the fabrication operation expands, assist with the development of sheet-metal flashing fabrication capabilities, including standard and custom flashing components for construction projects.
- Gradually take on additional responsibility for shop coordination, workflow, material requirements, quality, and day-to-day fabrication activities in preparation for progression into a Working Shop Supervisor role.
Prefabricated Wall Panel & Cladding Support When supporting our prefabricated wall panel and cladding operations, duties may include:
- Cutting and installing steel angles and miscellaneous steel framing components.
- Assisting with light-gauge steel framing and panel assembly.
- Drilling, fastening, and riveting cladding panels and related components.
- Assisting with the fabrication and assembly of prefabricated exterior wall panels.
- Material handling, organization, and general production duties on the fabrication/panel plant floor.
- Assisting with sheet-metal and flashing fabrication as this work is brought into the shop.
- Performing other construction-related shop duties as required.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Journeyperson/Journeyman Welder certification or equivalent recognized trade qualification.
- Valid welding qualifications/tickets applicable to the work being performed.
- Strong practical knowledge of steel fabrication, fitting, welding, and general shop practices.
- Ability to independently read and work from shop and fabrication drawings.
- Experience with common fabrication equipment, including saws, grinders, drills, welding machines, and related shop tools.
- Valid forklift certification or ability to obtain certification prior to operating company equipment.
- Knowledge of safe material handling and fabrication-shop practices.
- Ability to accurately use measuring and layout tools.
- Physically capable of performing regular fabrication,
material-handling, and construction-shop duties.
- Able to work independently while taking direction from the Welding/Fabrication Supervisor.
- Willingness to perform work outside of traditional welding duties, including prefabricated panel assembly, light-gauge steel framing, riveting, material handling, flashing fabrication, and general construction-shop work.
- Willingness to learn and operate additional fabrication equipment as the shop's capabilities expand.
- Interest and ability to develop into a hands-on shop supervisory role.
- Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to organize work, identify material or drawing issues, and communicate problems before they affect production.
- Reliable, safety-conscious, and able to maintain productivity without constant supervision
Preferred Experience Experience in one or more of the following would be considered an asset:
- Structural and miscellaneous steel fabrication.
- Construction-related steel fabrication.
- Previous lead hand, foreperson, or shop supervisory experience.
- Coordinating fabrication workflow and shop priorities.
- Light-gauge steel framing.
- Architectural metal or cladding fabrication.
- Sheet-metal flashing fabrication.
- Operation of sheet-metal brakes, shears, slitters, or similar flashing-fabrication equipment.
- ACM or other rainscreen cladding systems.
- Prefabricated exterior wall panel manufacturing.
- Reading detailed construction and fabrication shop drawings.
Chance for Advancement This position is intended for an experienced tradesperson who can initially function as the primary hands-on welder/fabricator under the current Welding/Fabrication Supervisor, with the expectation that the right individual will take on increasing responsibility as they become familiar with the operation.
The long-term intention is for the successful candidate to progress into a Working Shop Supervisor position, responsible for helping manage the day-to-day fabrication operation while continuing to work directly on fabrication projects. This may include coordinating shop priorities, organizing materials and workflow, reviewing drawings with the fabrication team, monitoring quality and productivity, and helping ensure work is completed safely and efficiently.
We are looking for someone interested in growing with the operation as the shop expands beyond traditional steel fabrication into additional capabilities, including in-house flashing and sheet-metal fabrication.”
