One-to-One Support Worker

Full-Time – 7 Hours per Day

$26.00–$33.00 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience The Gwa’sala-’Nakwaxda’xw School is seeking a One-to-One Student Support Worker to provide individualized support for a Pre K student with autism. This is a unique position that will require flexibility to work between Gwa’sala-’Nakwaxda’xw School and Gwa’sala-’Nakwaxda’xw Daycare, depending on the student’s programming, transition needs, and daily schedule. This position is for the 2026/2027 school year with the possibility of continuation.

Qualifications

- Minimum Grade 12 diploma.
- Education Assistant (EA), Early Childhood Educator (ECE/ECEA), Child and Youth Care, Special Education training, or a related field is preferred.
- Experience providing individualized support to children with autism or other diverse learning needs is strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of autism, communication differences, sensory needs, self-regulation, and positive behaviour support is an asset.
- Experience working with young children in a school, daycare, or similar setting.
- Experience working in a First Nations community is an asset.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

- Ability to develop a warm, caring, consistent, and trusting relationship with the student.
- Ability to follow and help implement individualized support plans developed in collaboration with the student’s family and professional team.
- Ability to work collaboratively with school staff, daycare staff, families, specialists, and other qualified partners.
- Understanding of, or willingness to learn about, Indigenous cultures, languages,



histories, and trauma informed approaches that support child and student well-being.
- Ability to demonstrate a positive, professional, and respectful attitude that reflects the values of Gwa’sala-’Nakwaxda’xw School and Daycare, including Maya’xala (respect).
- Physically capable of performing the duties required by the position, with possibility of assisting with toileting

Responsibilities

- Provide consistent one-to-one support for the student throughout the day.
- Work flexibly between the school and daycare according to the student’s needs and schedule.
- Assist with transitions between activities, environments, staff, and routines.
- Implement strategies and recommendations identified in the student’s individualized support plan.
- Work collaboratively with the student’s family, school and daycare teams, and outside professionals to provide consistent support.
- Participate in relevant training and professional development related to autism and individualized student support.
- Contribute to safe, welcoming, inclusive, and culturally responsive school and daycare environments.
