Job Posting: Paralegal / Law Clerk / Legal AssistantWANTED: A Licensed Paralegal Who Can Do a Little Bit of Everything
We are looking for a licensed Paralegal / Law Clerk / Legal Assistant to join our busy criminal defence practice in Kingston, Ontario.
This is a three-month contract opportunity for someone who is organized, capable, comfortable working independently, and interested in getting a lot of hands-on experience very quickly.
The main focus of the position will be virtual court appearances and assisting a lawyer with bail preparation.
There will also be plenty of the usual legal office work: drafting documents, communicating with clients, organizing files, dealing with disclosure, answering phones, and generally helping keep the wheels on.
If you are looking for a position where every day is exactly the same, this probably isn't it.
If you are looking for an opportunity to learn a lot, take on responsibility, and potentially build something of your own, keep reading.
Compensation and Schedule
- $23–$25 per hour to start
- Three-month contract position
- Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- Weekends are generally off, although occasional weekend work may be required depending on court schedules or urgent matters. Any weekend work is paid.
- If your performance and efforts are outstanding during the three-month contract, we would consider continuing your employment beyond the initial three months.
The Main Job: Bail Preparation and Virtual Court A significant part of this position will be working with a lawyer to prepare for bail hearings. This will include things like:
- Gathering information and documents needed for bail preparation
- Organizing information so the lawyer can quickly understand the case and prepare for court
- Preparing various documents and materials for bail hearings
- Communicating with clients, sureties, family members, and other involved people as directed
- Assisting with the administrative and organizational aspects of bail preparation
- Preparing documents and correspondence arising from bail matters
- Attending to virtual court appearances and routine court-related tasks within the scope of the position
- Keeping track of court dates and follow-up requirements
- Helping deal with the inevitable last-minute changes that happen before a bail hearing
Bail preparation can move very quickly. Sometimes the relevant information arrives at 4:47 p.m. for a hearing the next morning. We are looking for someone who can handle that without immediately running for the hills.
Other Duties
This is a Paralegal / Law Clerk / Legal Assistant position, so there will be a variety of other responsibilities.
Depending on your skills and experience, these may include:
- Drafting correspondence and legal documents
- Client intake and communication
- Organizing and reviewing disclosure
- File management
- Scheduling and coordinating court appearances
- Answering phones and responding to emails
- General reception and legal administrative duties
- Assisting lawyers with litigation preparation
- Conducting basic legal research
- Preparing materials for Provincial Offences matters
- Assisting with other matters within the firm's practice
In other words, we are looking for someone who is comfortable being a Jack or Jill of all legal trades. You don't need to know everything.
You do need to be willing to figure things out.
The Opportunity
This position has an opportunity that we think is particularly interesting for the right person.
The initial position is a three-month contract.
If your efforts and performance during those three months are outstanding, we would consider continuing your employment beyond the initial contract.
For a licensed Paralegal, there may also be an opportunity over time to develop your own practice in areas within the Paralegal scope of practice, including Provincial Offences and other appropriate areas.
That means this could be more than simply a job.
For the right person, it could be a chance to get a close-up look at how a busy legal practice operates while developing the skills, confidence, and experience needed to eventually build a practice of your own.
What We're Looking For
- Must be a licensed Paralegal in Ontario
- Law clerk or legal assistant experience is an asset
- Criminal law, bail preparation, or Provincial Offences experience is an asset, but not mandatory
- Robust organizational skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication
- Comfortable speaking with clients who may be stressed, upset, confused, or all three at once
- Able to work independently and take initiative
- Comfortable working with technology and virtual court platforms
- Able to learn quickly
- Good attention to detail
- Able to prioritize when several things become urgent at the same time
- Professional, reliable, and able to use common sense
- A good sense of humour is strongly encouraged
Most importantly, we are looking for someone who wants to learn. You don't have to walk through the door knowing how to do everything. You do need to be the kind of person who, when given something you've never done before, thinks, “Okay, let's figure this out.”
What This Job Is NOT
This isn't a job where you sit quietly in the corner doing photocopies for three months.
You will be involved.
You will deal with clients. You will attend virtual court. You will assist with bail preparation. You will prepare documents. You will see how criminal files move through the system.
You will also occasionally be asked to do something that wasn't on the original plan for the day.
That's legal practice.
Why This Role Exists
Criminal defence involves a strange combination of serious legal issues, urgent deadlines, court appearances, worried clients, incomplete information, and people who sometimes discover at 4:30 p.m. that they need something for court tomorrow.
Someone has to make all of that work.
We're looking for someone who can help.
If you're organized, calm under pressure, willing to learn, and capable of looking at a messy situation and figuring out what needs to happen next, you'll probably fit in well.
Why Join Us?
- Hands-on exposure to criminal defence and bail preparation
- Regular involvement with virtual court
- Practical experience that is difficult to get from a textbook
- The opportunity to work closely with a lawyer on real cases
- A varied position combining legal, administrative, and client-facing work
- A regular 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. weekday schedule
- Weekends generally free, with any required weekend work paid
- A three-month contract with the possibility of continued employment if your performance and efforts are outstanding
- For a licensed Paralegal, the opportunity to develop your own practice over time
- The chance to become genuinely useful rather than simply “gain experience”
Work Environment This is an in-person position based in our Kingston, Ontario office.
We work hard, move quickly, and take the work seriously.
We also try not to take ourselves too seriously.
Independence is respected. Questions are encouraged. Competence is appreciated. And if something goes wrong, the preferred response is generally to figure out how to fix it rather than spend 20 minutes deciding whose fault it was.
How to Apply
Please submit your resume and a brief cover letter explaining why you think you would be a good fit for the position.
If you've read this far, you are either genuinely interested or exceptionally committed to avoiding your current workload.
Either way, we respect it.
We are looking for the right person for the three-month contract, so if this sounds like something you would enjoy, don't overthink it.
