The repair welder and grinder is responsible for the repair, restoration, and surface rebuilding of centrifuge components, with a primary focus on separator bowls and decanter scrolls. This role performs high-precision welding, hardfacing, coating removal, and surface finishing operations to restore components to OEM specifications and ensure optimal mechanical performance and service life. The position requires advanced skills ins TIG welding, MIG welding, PTA welding, and flame spraying for hard facing applications.
In addition, the role includes extensive grinding, surface preparation, and polishing of stainless steel and wear surfaces, including the removal of existing coatings and preparation of components for welding and metallurgical repair processes.Responsibilities / Tasks
- Perform high quality TIG welding on stainless steel and other centrifuge component materials, including precision repair of cracks, wear areas, and structural defects.
- Execute MIG welding operations for structural repairs and build up applications.
- Perform PTA welding for high precision hardfacing of decanter scroll flights and wear prone surfaces.
- Apply flame spraying techniques for hardfacing and surface restoration of decanter scrolls and other wear components.
- Build up worn or eroded surfaces to restore original geometry and functional dimensions.
- Ensure weld integrity, penetration, and metallurgical quality in accordance with repair specifications and applicable standards.
- Control heat input and distortion to maintain dimensional stability or precision components.
- Perform all grinding operations required for repair preparation, including beveling, edge preparation and weld joint preparation.
- Remove existing coatings, hardfacing layers, corrosion products, and worn surface materials using appropriate mechanical grinding methods.
- Perform grinding to restore geometry, surface finish and dimensional requirements after welding or coating processes.
- Ensure all surfaces meet cleanliness and roughness requirements prior to welding or coating applications.
- Perform polishing of stainless steel components to restore surface finish and meet hygiene, process or functional requirements.
- Remove weld discoloration, oxidation and surface imperfections following welding operations.
- Safely handle large and heavy rotating equipment to prevent damage or distortion.
- Other duties as assigned by manager.
Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or GED – good foundation in math, physics and mechanical properties
- Technical education in mechanical engineering, industrial mechanics, machining, or a related field.
- Additional training in precision mechanics, rotating equipment, or machine repair is highly desirable.
- Formal training or certification in non destructive testing (specially dye penetrant testing) is an advantage.
- Welding qualification (TIG/MIG certifications)
- Minimum 3-5 years of hands on experience in mechanical repair, machining or maintenance of industrial equipment.
- Experience with welding, grinding, and surface restoration techniques in an industrial repair environment.
- Experience interpreting technical drawings, repair specifications, and engineering instructions
