Second Cook — Banquet Kitchen

Schedule: Event-based; daytime, evenings, weekends, and holidays required

About the Role The Hellenic Cultural Centre is seeking an experienced Second Cook to join our banquet kitchen team.

This is a part-time/casual, event-based position, with hours scheduled according to the Centre's event calendar and operational requirements. The successful candidate must have open availability and be available to work daytime shifts, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

We are specifically seeking a candidate with at least five years of professional kitchen experience, with banquet hall or large-volume event kitchen experience strongly preferred.

This position requires someone who understands the unique demands of banquet food production, including working from BEOs, preparing food in volume, coordinating kitchen staff, maintaining inventory, meeting event timelines, and maintaining a clean and protected professional kitchen.

Key Responsibilities

Banquet Kitchen Operations

- Assist with the preparation, production, cooking, plating, and service of food for weddings, banquets, corporate functions, celebrations, and other events.
- Read and accurately interpret Banquet Event Orders (BEOs) and prepare food according to event specifications, guest counts, menus, dietary requirements, and service timelines.
- Coordinate kitchen production to ensure food is prepared and ready according to scheduled event times.
- Work effectively in a high-volume banquet kitchen environment.
- Assist with buffet preparation, service, replenishment, and breakdown.
- Maintain consistent food quality, presentation, portion control, and timing.
- Communicate effectively with the Banquet Supervisor, General Manager, kitchen team, servers, and other event staff.

Staff Coordination




- Assist with scheduling and coordinating kitchen staff based on event requirements and guest counts.
- Provide direction and leadership to kitchen staff during events and preparation periods.
- Assign kitchen duties and ensure staff understand their responsibilities.
- Monitor staff performance and provide direction as required.
- Work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

Inventory & Food Management
- Assist with maintaining accurate inventory levels of food, kitchen supplies, and other required products.
- Monitor product usage and communicate shortages or ordering needs to management.
- Follow proper food storage, labeling, rotation, and waste-control procedures.
- Assist with receiving and organizing food deliveries when required.
- Ensure food is properly stored and handled according to food safety requirements.

Cleanliness, Health & Safety
- Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary kitchen and work area throughout each shift.
- Follow all food safety, sanitation, workplace health and safety, and Centre policies and procedures.
- Properly clean and sanitize equipment, preparation areas, work surfaces, and kitchen spaces.
- Follow proper food handling, storage, temperature control, and allergen procedures.
- Report equipment issues, hazards, food safety concerns, or maintenance requirements to management immediately.

Required Qualifications Applicants must meet the following requirements:

- Minimum 5 years of professional kitchen experience.
- Banquet hall, catering, or large-volume event kitchen experience is strongly preferred.




- Demonstrated ability to work from Banquet Event Orders (BEOs).
- Experience preparing food for large guest counts and time-sensitive events.
- Experience coordinating or scheduling kitchen staff.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills.
- Strong understanding of food safety and kitchen sanitation.
- Food Handler / Food Service Certificate required or must be obtained prior to employment.
- Ability to follow recipes, menus, production requirements, and event specifications accurately.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to food quality and consistency.

Availability Requirements — REQUIRED This is an event-based, part-time/casual position.

The successful candidate must have open availability and be available to work:

- Daytime shifts
- Evenings
- Weekends
- Statutory holidays

Event schedules vary based on bookings, and shifts will be scheduled according to the Centre's operational and event requirements. Applicants who are unable to provide broad availability across daytime, evening, weekend, and holiday shifts will not be considered.
