We are looking for an experienced and detail-oriented Senior Bookkeeper to join our growing remote accounting team.
The ideal candidate should have strong experience working with Canadian businesses and accounting requirements , particularly using QuickBooks Online (Canadian Version) .
This is not a data-entry role . The successful candidate will independently manage multiple client files, maintain accurate financial records, perform reconciliations, handle payroll and government remittances, and prepare organized year-end working papers for CPA review.
You should be comfortable working with minimal supervision, resolving discrepancies, performing catch-up and cleanup bookkeeping, and ensuring client accounts are accurate, complete, and ready for review.
Key Responsibilities
Full-Cycle Bookkeeping
- Manage complete bookkeeping functions for multiple Canadian clients.
- Maintain accurate and organized financial records.
- Record and post journal entries.
- Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts.
- Perform month-end and year-end closing procedures.
- Reconcile:
- Accounts Receivable (A/R)
- Accounts Payable (A/P)
- Bank accounts
- Credit card accounts
- Loans and other balance sheet accounts
Financial Reporting
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports.
- Analyze financial statements and investigate variances.
- Prepare supporting schedules and account reconciliations.
- Create reviewer notes and explanations for financial reporting packages.
- Perform foreign exchange translations where required.
- Assist with compilation and year-end engagement preparation.
Payroll & Government Compliance Process payroll using platforms such as:
- QuickBooks Online Payroll
- Wagepoint
- Payworks
- ADP
- Similar payroll platforms
Prepare and manage:
- GST/HST/PST filings
- Source deductions
- Employer Health Tax (EHT)
- Workers' Compensation Board (WCB) remittances
- T4 Slips
- T4A Slips
- T5018 Slips
- Records of Employment (ROE)
Year-End & CPA Handoff
- Prepare year-end working paper files.
- Ensure all supporting documentation is complete.
- Prepare lead sheets and reconciliations.
- Prepare reviewer notes and supporting schedules.
- Deliver clean and organized files for CPA review and tax preparation.
- Take ownership of month-end and year-end close processes.
Client Support
- Respond to client queries professionally and promptly.
- Understand client business operations and identify areas for improvement.
- Communicate bookkeeping issues and recommendations clearly.
- Manage multiple client deadlines while maintaining accuracy and quality.
Requirements
Mandatory Requirements
- 4–5+ years of hands-on bookkeeping experience.
- Strong experience with QuickBooks Online – Canadian Version .
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel .
- Experience working with Canadian companies and accounting requirements.
- Strong understanding of:
- Accrual accounting
- Canadian bookkeeping standards
- Payroll processing
- Government remittances
- Financial statement preparation
- Experience with:
- Month-end close
- Year-end close
- Catch-up bookkeeping
- Cleanup of messy or outdated bookkeeping files
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Ability to manage multiple client deadlines simultaneously.
Preferred Qualifications Experience with any of the following is an asset:
- Dext
- AutoEntry
- Karbon Practice Management
- Sage 50 – Canadian Edition
- QuickBooks Desktop (QBD)
- Xero
- CPA firms or public accounting environments
Education
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Commerce, Finance, or a related field .
- Accounting or professional bookkeeping certification is an asset.
