Position Summary The Structural & Piping Fabrication Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate, competitive, and commercially sound estimates for structural steel, miscellaneous metals, and industrial piping fabrication projects.

The Estimator reviews client RFQs, drawings, specifications, schedules, and commercial requirements to establish material quantities, fabrication labour requirements, subcontract requirements, project indirect costs, risks, and final pricing. Estimates must reflect how the work will actually be fabricated rather than relying solely on material tonnage or historical unit rates.

Key ResponsibilitiesTender & RFQ Review

· Review incoming RFQs and tender packages.

· Assess drawings, specifications, scope documents, Bills of Material, schedules, and commercial requirements.

· Establish bid deliverables and closing requirements.

· Identify exclusions, clarifications, assumptions, risks, and scope gaps.

· Participate in bid/no-bid reviews.

· Prepare RFIs and technical clarification requests where required.

Material Takeoff & Procurement Estimating

· Prepare detailed material takeoffs for structural shapes, plate, miscellaneous steel, grating, stair treads, handrail, bolting, pipe, fittings, flanges, valves, supports, attachments, welding consumables, and coating requirements.

· Determine economical purchasing quantities and stock lengths considering crop, nesting, waste, minimum order quantities, and availability.

· Obtain supplier pricing and evaluate quotations for completeness and compliance.

Fabrication Labour Estimating

· Develop detailed labour estimates for receiving/handling, layout, cutting, drilling, coping, plate processing, fitting, structural welding, pipe fitting/welding, assembly, inspection, NDE, pressure testing, loading, and shipping.

· Develop labour hours based on complexity and actual fabrication requirements.

· Apply productivity factors for project complexity, material type, welding requirements, shop loading, shift conditions,



and schedule constraints.

Welding & Quality Requirements

· Review weld symbols, sizes, joint configurations, and welding requirements.

· Identify required welding processes, including SMAW, FCAW, GMAW, GTAW, SAW, or others as applicable.

· Identify CJP/PJP, fillet, groove, and specialty welding requirements.

· Evaluate welding quantities and deposition requirements where appropriate.

· Identify PWHT, preheat, NDE, inspection, testing, material traceability, and documentation requirements.

· Coordinate with Quality personnel for specialized code or client requirements.

Pricing & Commercial Development

· Prepare complete estimates incorporating material, direct labour, shop equipment, consumables, subcontractors, NDE, coatings, freight, engineering/detailing, project management, quality, indirect labour, overhead, contingency, escalation, risk, and profit margin.

· Prepare estimate summaries and recommendations for management review.

· Support negotiations and clarification meetings with clients.

· Prepare pricing for change orders and additional work on active projects.

Estimate Handover

· Conduct a formal estimate handover to Production Supervision and Operations upon award.

· Transfer labour budgets, material budgets, subcontract allowances, assumptions, exclusions, risks, and opportunities.

· Identify critical procurement items and fabrication assumptions.

· Provide the basis of estimate for future project cost comparison.

Continuous Improvement

· Compare estimated versus actual labour and material performance.

· Maintain historical productivity data and estimating labour units.





· Maintain material pricing databases.

· Track historical $/tonne and MH/tonne while recognizing project-specific complexity.

· Use completed-project data to improve estimating accuracy.

Qualifications

Education: Engineering Technology, Welding Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Construction Management, or equivalent fabrication experience is preferred.

Experience: 5+ years of structural steel, piping, industrial fabrication, construction, or estimating experience preferred. Strong shop fabrication experience is highly desirable.

Pay: $70,000.00-$85,000.00 per year
