POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Environmental Supervisor, the Wastewater Operator is primarily responsible for ensuring that all equipment associated with wastewater processing at the facility runs smoothly and continuously throughout the production process. This includes all processes completed from the time that the wastewater leaves the production facility to the time when it is released into the environment.

The Wastewater Operator is also responsible for monitoring some air purification and filtering systems and ensuring the facility is in environmental regulatory compliance at all times.

Schedule: Rotating shifts consisting of Days - 7AM-3PM, Afternoons - 3PM-11PM, Nights -11PM-7 AM

POSITION AND JOB RESPONSIBILTIES:

- Operate, monitor, maintain, and troubleshoot on-site environmental control systems including the wastewater treatment plant (consisting of dissolved air filtration, activated sludge treatment, waste sludge separation/handling, tertiary treatment, and other process unit operations)
- Complete regular equipment checks and process verification
- Collect daily environmental samples
- Assist with sample analysis and reporting of the monitoring data and ensure good record keeping
- Responsible for operating and troubleshooting air quality equipment
- Operate a forklift, other large equipment, and chemical systems safely
- Maintain a safe and tidy working environment at all times
- Responsible for effectively and efficiently dealing with issues that may arise including other plant duties, as assigned

REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

- University Degree or College Diploma in an environmental or related discipline
- OIT and/or Class 1 WWTP Certification required




- The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 1-year operating experience in industrial and/or municipal biological wastewater treatment
- Able to demonstrate a good understanding of wastewater treatment processes, environmental, equipment operation and maintenance, and environmental regulatory requirements/due diligence
- Understanding of HACCP and its application to manufacturing
- Must be computer literate, specifically with Microsoft Office applications, and have data analysis skills
- Flexible and calm temperament to handle a quick-paced setting.
- Good initiative and strong team player
- Self-motivated and capable of delivering outcomes with minimal supervision.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Must be able to work nights and weekends, rotating shifts
- Class G drivers’ license/reliable transportation to/from work at all times

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

- Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the AODA, ESA, OHSA and other federal, and provincial standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards
- Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the AODA, ESA, OHSA and other federal, and provincial standards
- Must be able to bend, kneel, squat, crawl (occasional)
- Must be able to lift/lower and carry 5 to 55 pounds (occasional to frequent)
- Must be able to push/pull between 18 to 186 pounds (rare to occasional)




- Must be able to work comfortably and safely in elevated areas and confined spaces
- Must be able to climb stairs safely (rare) in order to access various areas throughout the facility
- Must be able to climb standard ladders (rare) that may be utilized to access equipment within the facility
- Must be able to stretch, reach and view/access difficult areas
- Must be able to walk for a sustained duration of 5 minutes (frequent to constant)
- Must be able to stand for a sustained duration of 10 minutes (frequent to constant)
- Must be able to sit for a sustained duration of 15 minutes (occasional)
- Must be able to grip and handle objects such as tools, equipment, paperwork and vehicle controls (constant)
- Position includes utilization of computer systems in the department office
- Position requires talking, writing, reading, hearing, smelling, tactile sense, concentration and alertness
- Ability to focus for moderate periods of time while driving in the yard, dumping bins, accurately completing paperwork
- Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment
- Must be able to operate and work with machinery
- Must be able to operate a forklift
- Typical of a food manufacturing plant environment including high volume of raw material smell, variable flooring, lighting and temperature conditions
- Noise level from moderate to high
- Irregular schedule, rotating – nights and weekends included
- Must be able to work alone
