ONE Fertility Burlington is a state-of-the-art, full-service fertility centre dedicated to providing comprehensive, specialized fertility care, treatment, and counselling to patients.
Reporting to the Scientific Director, the Embryologist plays an integral role in supporting ONE Fertility’s commitment to excellence in patient care. The Embryologist applies advanced scientific knowledge, technical expertise, and strong interpersonal skills to support the delivery of high-quality laboratory services and ensure the highest standards of patient care and safety.
Laboratory duties
- Identify, assess the maturity of, and carefully handle the oocytes after the retrieval
- Perform In vitro fertilization (IVF) or Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) as ordered by the Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Specialist
- Monitor, culture and grade embryos
- Perform cryopreservation and thawing of gametes and embryos
- Prepare embryos for transfers
- Detailed and accurate record-keeping of all procedures, specimens, and patient data.
- Quality control and lab management
Administration duties
- Communicate effectively with patient/families and interdisciplinary colleagues
- Act as an effective team member by sharing opinions, discussing issues and aligning personal objectives with those of the team
- Participate in the development of policies, procedures and standards, as they relate to laboratory procedures used in the treatment of infertility patients and their families
- Assist with implementation of changes within the assisted reproductive therapies service
- Assist with preparation of quarterly reports and participate on appropriate committees
- Carry out the necessary procedures and documentation as prescribed by the Canadian Assisted Reproduction Registry (CARTR) and/or Health Canada for assisted conception services and procedures
- Prepare for site visitation and accreditation by Health Canada, Accreditation Canada, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) or any other licensing body that ONE Fertility is required for certification and licensing
Research and Teaching
- Engage in the advancement of scientific knowledge by participating in research-related activities
- Identify and research ART questions through critical analysis and by using the scientific method
- Work in collaboration with other trainees including fellows, residents, medical and graduate students
- Assist in the training of new staff hired by ONE Fertility
Professional Development
- Demonstrate an ongoing commitment for continuing self-development
- Participate in professional associations at a regional, national, and international level
- Maintain clinical competence through the integration of practice, education and research within the specialty role
Qualifications
- Ability to perform general laboratory techniques (e.g. processing of specimens, operation/trouble shooting of equipment, quality control procedures)
- Excellent microscopy skills
- Excellent manual dexterity, eyesight and hand-to-eye co-ordination
- Ability to work effectively alone and as a team member in a quick-paced environment is required
- Effective time-management skills; ability to organize and set priorities.
- Excellent problem recognition and problem-solving skills
- Ability to manage conflicting demands (e.g. unexpected procedures, time changes, equipment availability)
- Above average skills in computer applications (word processing, spreadsheet, presentation software, database, statistical software, etc.) and proper use of the internet as a information/research tool
- Effective verbal and written communication skills required
- Ability to work accurately under stressful conditions required
- Knowledge of applicable Hospital and departmental policies and legislation required
- Demonstrated commitment to continuing education
Experience
- Hands-on experience in a IVF laboratory
- Ability to perform ICSI independently
- Biopsy training would be an asset
- Knowledge of the theory and practice of laboratory procedures, instruments, equipment and special techniques (on-the-job experience), in assigned area required
Education
- B.Sc., M.Sc. in Biology / Embryology / Life Sciences

Ability to commute/relocate:
- In-person at Burlington, ON. Candidates must be able to reliably commute to the workplace or plan to relocate prior to commencing employment.
