Organization The Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture (NSFA) represents the interests of Nova Scotia’s agricultural community. Today its membership accounts for well over 90% of all agricultural production in Nova Scotia and brings together farm businesses representing all aspects of primary agriculture in the province. The NSFA tackles policy issues that impact the competitive and sustainable nature of the industry and takes an active role in supporting registered farms through the delivery of programs and services.

The NSFA supports farms by providing tools, resources, best practices, and training while advocating on their behalf.

Position Overview The NSFA, in collaboration with Farm Safety Nova Scotia, is seeking a Farm Safety Coordinator (FSC) for a Parental Leave Contract (approximately 12 months, starting in November). The FSC will support a culture of health and safety where every decision made on Nova Scotia farms begins with safety. Reporting to the Farm and Workforce Manager, the FSC will support the farm community in adopting and implementing health and safety culture on farms through effective training and management systems.

They are responsible for providing resource support to farm owners, managers, and employees in farm health and safety and on-farm emergency preparedness while engaging with key industry stakeholders. The FSC will make recommendations to leadership on health and safety programs to be delivered.

Key Responsibilities

- Lead and implement farm health and safety programming in alignment with Farm Safety Nova Scotia’s strategic plan
- Actively participate in the Farm and Workforce Development Team to support the execution of the NSFA’s strategic plan and activities




- Manage and coordinate the development and delivery of tools, resources, and best management practices to support effective risk management and farm safety programs, engaging directly with farmers and the farm community
- Manage and coordinate farm inquiries, serving as the first point of contact for farm employers seeking information on health and safety-related issues and concerns including best practices and legislative requirements
- Support farms in fostering a culture of health and safety for their employees as a part of a recruitment and retention strategy
- Manage and coordinate the development and delivery of health and safety training in collaboration with Training and Awareness Coordinator
- Support coordination of on-farm emergency preparedness resources and support
- Support the development of farm health and safety campaigns such as One Road and Canadian Agricultural Safety Week
- Coordinate the development and promotion of farm health and safety for various communication platforms including websites, articles, newsletters and social media
- Liaise with stakeholders and manage and build a network of specialists, subcontractors, and consultants to support the advancement of the Farm Safety mandate
- Develop and maintain relationships and partnerships with related organizations (e.g. Commodity groups, LSI, WCB, CASA)




- Support advocacy efforts in matters of health and safety with the government, health and safety associations and other outside agencies and organizations

Skills & Qualifications

- Post-secondary degree in agriculture, occupational health and safety or equivalent
- Program development, implementation, and evaluation experience
- Knowledge of occupational health and safety is required.
- Experience working with small and medium-sized rural businesses is required with knowledge of the agriculture considered an asset.
- Effective time management, prioritization, and organizational skills
- Effective problem-solving and leadership skills
- A Nova Scotia driver’s license and access to a vehicle are required

Compensation

- Annual salary of $60,300 - $67,400
- 3 weeks of vacation annually
- Annual Holiday office closure (December 24 – January 1)
