The Opportunity

McElhanney has an opportunity for a Junior Structural Engineer (EIT) to join our Building Structures group in Courtenay, BC from May 2027 or following graduation. In this role, you will support the delivery of structural engineering services for a variety of public and private sector projects, gaining hands-on experience with building design, structural analysis, construction review, and project delivery. As part of the Building Structures group, you will work alongside experienced engineers and technologists who are committed to mentorship, technical development, and high-quality project outcomes. You’ll also have the opportunity to collaborate with McElhanney’s broader multidisciplinary teams, including civil, geotechnical, environmental, geomatics, and materials testing professionals, giving you exposure to how structural engineering supports integrated project delivery.

What You’ll Do

- Provide design and drafting support for building structures projects, including calculations, drawings, reports, and construction documentation under the guidance of experienced structural engineers.
- Assist with structural analysis, design coordination, and construction review for new buildings, renovations, additions, and other structural projects.
- Support the preparation of structural drawings, specifications, tender packages,



and contract documents.
- Complete site visits and field reviews to observe structural construction progress, document findings, and support quality control requirements.
- Collaborate with internal project teams and other disciplines to understand how building structures integrate with civil, geotechnical, environmental, surveying, and materials testing services.
- Work with Building Structures team members to meet project schedules, budgets, technical standards, and client expectations.
- Receive direct supervision and mentorship from a professional engineer (P.Eng.) registered in British Columbia, with opportunities to develop your structural engineering knowledge and qualified judgement.

What You’ll Bring
- Degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited post-secondary institution.
- Interest in Structural Engineering.
- Coursework, co-op experience, or project exposure related to structural engineering, building design, construction review, or materials is considered an asset.
- Registration in good standing as an Engineer-In-Training (EIT) with EGBC, or eligibility to be registered.
- Experience with structural design software, Revit, AutoCAD, or similar technical tools is an asset.
- High productivity, attention to detail, curiosity to learn, effective verbal and written communication skills, and an ability to work well within a collaborative Building Structures team environment.
- Valid Class 5 Drivers License.

What Can We Offer You? The salary range for this role is $60,000 - $80,000 per annum. McElhanney offers fair compensation that is commensurate with the individual’s education, experience, skills, and professional qualifications. The posted base salary/wage range is representative of the required level of qualifications and experience for the position as noted in the job posting. The salary offered will be based on the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.
