Position Title: Controller Contract Duration: 1112 months Salary & Benefits: Approximately $45-55/hour incorporated Position Status: Current Vacancy Location: Remote within Canada Work Model: Fully Remote candidates must be available to work primarily Eastern Time Zone hours Our client is seeking a hands-on, highly skilled Controller to lead full-cycle operational accounting, oversee financial reporting, and strengthen organizational stewardship during an approximately one-year term.

This opportunity is ideal for a collaborative, detail-oriented finance professional who thrives in a dynamic, mission-driven environment and understands the unique financial requirements of nonprofit and grant-making organizations.

The Controller will oversee the day-to-day finance function while supporting a small team and ensuring strong financial controls, accurate reporting, effective grant and fund management, and disciplined financial processes.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work remotely while contributing to an organization with an international mandate and meaningful social impact.

Key Responsibilities Controllership & Financial Operations Lead full-cycle operational accounting, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll coordination, journal entries, and reconciliations.

Manage month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting.

Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with Canadian accounting standards for nonprofit organizations.

Oversee internal controls, financial policies, and compliance with donor, grant, and institutional funder requirements.

Maintain and monitor restricted and unrestricted funding, ensuring accurate allocation, tracking, and reporting.

Support budgeting, forecasting,



and financial analysis to inform organizational decision-making.

Coordinate with external auditors and support audit preparation, documentation, and year-end requirements.

Lead continuous-improvement initiatives to strengthen financial systems, workflows, controls, and reporting quality.

Leadership & Team Management Supervise, mentor, and support a finance team of two.

Foster a collaborative and supportive team culture grounded in accountability, clarity, and career development.

Provide guidance on technical accounting matters, systems, and process improvements.

Ensure reporting cycles, financial responsibilities, and deadlines remain organized and up to date.

Systems & Financial Processes Oversee and optimize the use of financial systems, with SAGE Intacct experience considered a strong asset.

Utilize project-management and collaboration tools to manage financial reporting cycles and workflows effectively.

Maintain strong data integrity and documentation practices across financial systems.

Identify opportunities to simplify and strengthen processes while maintaining strong controls and audit readiness.

The ideal candidate brings at least five years of progressive accounting or financial management experience, ideally within a nonprofit, international NGO, charitable, or grant-making environment.

They have a strong command of full-cycle accounting, financial reporting, month-end close, internal controls, audit preparation,



and restricted versus unrestricted funding.

They are highly organized, comfortable managing multiple priorities independently in a remote environment, and have demonstrated experience supporting and developing finance staff.

The successful candidate will bring strong judgment, discretion, and communication skills and will be comfortable working within a mission-driven organization with an international mandate.

Experience with SAGE Intacct and proficiency in French or Spanish are considered valuable assets.

Candidates must be legally eligible to work in Canada and able to work primarily within Eastern Time Zone business hours.

What Will Make You Stand Out: Demonstrated success improving financial systems, workflows, controls, or reporting quality within a nonprofit or grant-making organization.

Strong experience managing restricted funding, grants, and donor compliance requirements.

Hands-on experience with SAGE Intacct or a comparable financial management platform.

Experience supporting international or mission-driven organizations.

French or Spanish language skills. A highly organized, self-directed working style with the ability to stay ahead of deadlines in a fully remote environment. AI may be used to support certain administrative aspects of our recruitment process.
