About Opal Hospitality
Opal Hospitality Inc. is a multi-property hotel management company operating Marriott, Hilton, IHG, and Best Western branded hotels across Canada and the United States. Our in-house finance team handles full accounting for a growing group of these properties — currently 13 hotels and 2 restaurants — from our Mississauga head office, and we are adding to the team as that scope expands.
The Role
We are looking for a Senior Accountant. The day-to-day bookkeeping sales entries, invoice coding, payroll, and reconciliations, runs through an outsourced partner and a small in-house team. You are the person who makes sure all of it is correct: you review the work, keep coding and approvals on track, keep the books clean, and close on time, month after month, across every property you support. You'll coordinate with property managers and act as the technical contact for our external auditors.
If you are meticulous, organized, and genuinely bothered by errors, you will fit right in.
What You'll Do
Month-end close & reporting
- Run month-end close across all entities, Canadian and US, and keep the close calendar on track
- Review and finalize the financials prepared by the outsourced bookkeeping team, ready for the Director's review
- Maintain accrual discipline proper monthly accruals and prepaids, with no adjusting entries used to patch coding errors
- Confirm opening entries are correct
- Prepare the monthly financial package for the Director and support ad-hoc reporting requests
Accounts payable & coding
- Manage the in-office bookkeeping team to stay on top of invoice approvals and correct coding, and step in to assist when needed
- Keep invoices flowing into Nimble accurately through vendor portals — the bookkeepers handle entry, and you help when volumes require
- Apply bill payments accurately when a data request calls for it
- Field all data requests from the outsourced team and troubleshoot issues independently
Balance sheet & reconciliations
- Ensure the bookkeeping team completes monthly balance-sheet reconciliations across every property,
and review them for accuracy
- Monitor AR aging monthly and confirm bank-to-property alignment
- Maintain fixed asset and depreciation schedules and FF&E; capital reserves
- Maintain debt and lease schedules
- Process AR allowances and write-offs
- Track advance deposits, deferred revenue, and gift card and loyalty liabilities
- Prepare monthly intercompany bookings across Canadian and US entities
- Reconcile prepaids and deferred liabilities and revenue
USALI & mapping accuracy
- Keep all reporting consistent with USALI across the portfolio
- Validate PMS-to-GL mapping at implementation and as new revenue and expense types arise
- Validate payroll-to-GL mapping at implementation and as new line items arise
- Validate legacy-GL-to-USALI-GL mapping at implementation
Payroll
- Prepare biweekly pay runs for the 4 owned properties
- Keep payroll tax remittances accurate and on time (CPP, EI, EHT, WSIB, and US equivalents)
Tax & compliance filings
- Prepare and file HST/GST through CRA, including direct filings for individual properties as needed
- Support US state and local sales and lodging tax filings
- Accrue property tax and schedule payments
- Prepare T4A, T5, and 1099 issuance as needed
Year-end & new properties
- Prepare the year-end audit package for external auditors within 15 days of year-end, and serve as the technical contact for the audit
- Prepare 90-day post-takeover reconciliations on newly acquired properties
- Set up new entities — opening balances, chart of accounts, and mapping — for the Director's approval
Team & systems
- Train, coach, and develop the in-house administrative support
- Provide day-to-day technical direction to the outsourced bookkeeping team
- Administer the accounting systems and protect data integrity
How We Work
Month-end is disciplined: proper accruals and prepaids, a full balance-sheet review for every property, and a close that lands on schedule. We value accuracy over rework and organization over last-minute scrambles. The right person here is careful, consistent, and takes full ownership of clean numbers with proper supporting documents (invoices, statements, etc.).
What You Bring
- Canadian CPA designation
- Minimum 5 years of hotel accounting experience; 2 years in restaurant accounting preferred
- USALI knowledge inside and out
- Multi-entity accounting, ideally cross-border Canada/US (HST/ITC, cross-border payroll)
- CRA filing experience (HST/GST) and a solid grasp of GAAP / ASPE
- Experience validating PMS, payroll, and GL mapping and supporting new implementations
- Confidence managing an outsourced bookkeeping partner and coaching in-house support
- Advanced Excel
- Efficient, organized, and exceptionally accurate — you rarely make errors, and you catch the ones others miss
Nice to Have
- Franchise brand experience (Marriott, Hilton, IHG, Best Western)
- Experience with hospitality accounting systems (Nimble, M3, Inn-Flow, or similar)
- Experience with the outsourced-bookkeeping model
- Restaurant accounting depth
