Position: Accounting Technician

Alexander First Nation Administration is seeking a qualified and experienced Accounting Technician to join the Finance Department. Reporting directly to the Finance Director, the Accounting Technician is responsible for supporting the day-to-day accounting and payroll functions of Alexander First Nation and its programs in accordance with AFN Financial Management Policies, generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), internal controls, funding requirements, and applicable statutory requirements.

Position Summary The Accounting Technician will have significant responsibility for payroll administration, time and attendance records, payroll reconciliations, benefits and pension administration, accounts payable and receivable, financial recordkeeping, reconciliations, and audit preparation. The position requires a high level of accuracy, confidentiality, organization, and professional judgment.

Key Responsibilities The successful candidate will be responsible for:

- Processing payroll using Sage 300 and ADP Workforce Now, including hours worked, leave, overtime, payroll adjustments, deductions, benefits, garnishments, and employer contributions.
- Reviewing timesheets and maintaining accurate time and attendance information, including vacation, sick leave, unpaid leave, and other employee entitlements.
- Completing payroll reconciliations for CPP, EI, income tax, pension, group benefits, and other payroll-related accounts.
- Assisting with T4s, T4As, Records of Employment, year-end payroll requirements, and CRA compliance.
- Administering employee benefit and pension changes and processing applicable garnishments.
- Supporting accounts payable functions,



including invoice review, coding, posting, vendor payments, EFT processing, vendor reconciliations, and maintaining appropriate supporting documentation.
- Supporting accounts receivable functions, including recording payments, preparing invoices, monitoring outstanding receivables, completing reconciliations, and following up on overdue accounts.
- Maintaining accurate and audit-ready electronic and physical financial records.
- Assisting with financial reports, trial balance reconciliations, variance analysis, budget preparation and adjustments as directed by the Finance Director.
- Providing documentation and reconciliation support during the annual audit.
- Completing credit card reconciliations and supporting approved financial workflows.
- Responding professionally to employee payroll inquiries and escalating complex or sensitive matters to the Finance Director.
- Maintaining strict confidentiality of payroll, employee, banking, and financial information.
- Performing other financial and administrative duties as assigned by the Finance Director.

Education and Experience

Applicants should possess

· Minimum Education: Post-secondary diploma or certificate in Payroll Administration, Accounting, or a related field

· Preferred Education: BCom in Accounting.

· Qualified Certification: Active Payroll Compliance Professional (PCP)



or Payroll Leadership Professional (PLP) certification is preferred.

· Applicants should also demonstrate knowledge of accounting principles, auditing practices, applicable legislation and regulations, and accounting software. The current identifies a minimum of five years of experience involving financial systems, budgets, financial reporting, financial analysis, auditing, taxation, and financial advice. Knowledge of First Nations administration and management is considered an asset.

Working Conditions: This position is primarily office-based and involves extensive interaction with employees and various levels of management. Travel and overtime may be required to meet operational, payroll, financial reporting, year-end, and audit requirements. The position may require lifting up to 25 pounds.
