Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Construction Manager to oversee projects from pre-construction planning through final completion. This role is ideal for a construction professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment, enjoys leading teams, collaborating with clients, and delivering projects safely, on schedule, and within budget.
Position Summary The Construction Manager is responsible for planning, coordinating, and managing construction activities for sports facility and athletic surface projects throughout Atlantic Canada. The successful candidate will oversee field crews, subcontractors, schedules, budgets, procurement, safety programs, quality control, and client communications while ensuring projects are delivered to the highest standards.
This position combines office-based project management with regular travel to active construction sites and requires solid leadership, organizational, and technical capabilities.
Key Responsibilities
Project Planning & Management
- Manage projects from contract award through project close-out.
- Develop and maintain project schedules and work plans.
- Coordinate the installation team and work with project coordinator to coordinate materials and equipment.
- Monitor project budgets, labour productivity, and material costs.
- Review drawings,
specifications, contracts, and project requirements.
- Identify project risks and implement mitigation strategies.
- Ensure projects are completed safely, on time, and within budget.
Construction Operations
- Oversee field crews on multiple projects.
- Coordinate and lead daily and weekly construction activities.
- Manage site logistics, deliveries, equipment, and workforce requirements.
- Conduct regular site visits and inspections.
- Troubleshoot construction issues and resolve field challenges efficiently.
- Ensure adherence to project specifications and manufacturer requirements.
Safety Leadership
- Promote a strong safety culture across all projects.
- Ensure compliance with Occupational Health and Safety regulations.
- Conduct site safety reviews and inspections.
- Lead toolbox talks and safety meetings.
- Investigate incidents and implement corrective actions when necessary.
Quality Control
- Establish and maintain quality control procedures.
- Conduct inspections throughout project execution.
- Ensure installations meet contract specifications and manufacturer standards.
- Oversee project commissioning, deficiency management, and project turnover.
Client & Stakeholder Relations
- Serve as the primary point of contact for owners, consultants, contractors, and project stakeholders.
- Attend project meetings and provide regular progress updates.
Team Leadership
- Mentor and develop site foremen, and field staff.
- Willingness to engage hands on and train and support the crew in the field.
- Assist with recruitment, training, and performance management.
- Foster a collaborative and professional team environment.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives throughout the organization.
Qualifications
- 8+ years of construction management, project management, or site supervision experience.
- Proven ability to manage multiple construction projects simultaneously.
- Strong understanding of commercial, institutional, or civil construction.
- Experience reading and interpreting construction drawings and specifications.
- Strong scheduling, planning, and organizational skills.
- Experience managing subcontractors and project budgets.
- Strong communication and leadership abilities.
- Experience with athletic facilities, sports flooring, synthetic turf, running tracks, or recreation infrastructure is an asset.
- Valid driver's license.
- Ability to travel throughout Atlantic Canada (up to 75% of the time could be away from Halifax)
- COR or safety management experience.
