The Controls Engineer is responsible for developing, integrating, testing, debugging, and commissioning automation and control systems for custom machines and automated test equipment.
The Controls Engineer is expected to take ownership of assigned controls scope, translate engineering requirements into functional control solutions, and resolve most technical issues independently with limited supervision.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, modify, and troubleshoot PLC and HMI programs for complete machine functions, including Omron and Allen-Bradley systems.
- Develop machine sequences, states, interlocks, alarms, diagnostics, and fault-recovery logic.
- Configure and troubleshoot servo drives, motion systems, positioning, and other control devices.
- Develop and integrate applications involving vision systems, barcode readers, and industrial robots, including Epson and ABB.
- Configure and troubleshoot industrial communication networks, including EtherNet/IP, EtherCAT, and other industrial protocols.
- Integrate PLCs with robots, vision systems, test equipment, databases (SQL), and other machine subsystems.
- Support electrical and controls architecture for custom automation and test systems.
- Participate in machine safety implementation, testing, and validation.
- Develop and maintain I/O lists, functional specifications, sequence-of-operation documents, controls schematics, and other controls documentation.
- Support electrical panel build, machine assembly, wiring, and controls integration as required.
- Independently debug machine-control systems during assembly, integration, and testing.
- Lead controls-related FAT activities and support SAT activities at customer sites.
- Support machine installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, and customer acceptance.
- Diagnose complex controls and integration issues and implement corrective actions.
- Participate in root-cause analysis and continuous improvement activities.
- Estimate controls engineering effort and provide input to project schedules.
- Coordinate technical activities with Mechanical, Electrical, Software, and Technician teams.
- Communicate technical status, issues, risks, and required actions to Project Management and Engineering Management.
- Provide technical support to customers when assigned.
- Provide technical guidance and mentoring to Junior Engineers and Technicians.
Expected Skills / Experience
PLC / HMI
- Strong working knowledge of PLC and HMI systems, preferably Omron and Allen-Bradley.
- Ability to independently develop structured PLC applications and complete machine sequences.
- Experience with alarms, diagnostics, recipes, operator interfaces, and machine configuration.
Motion
- Ability to configure and troubleshoot servo systems, positioning, and coordinated motion.
- Experience with VFDs and other motion/control devices is an asset.
Robotics
- Experience with industrial robotic applications, including setup, programming, I/O integration, and verification.
- Experience with Epson or ABB robots is an asset.
Industrial Networking
- Ability to configure, troubleshoot, and integrate industrial communication networks.
- Experience with EtherNet/IP, EtherCAT, and other industrial communication protocols.
Safety
- Understanding of machine safety principles and safety circuits.
- Ability to implement, test, and validate defined machine safety functions.
Machine Integration
- Ability to independently integrate multiple machine subsystems.
- Experience integrating PLCs with robots, vision, barcode,
test equipment, databases, and other external devices.
- Ability to troubleshoot electrical, controls, and system-integration issues during machine build and commissioning.
Controls Engineer Independence The Controls Engineer should be capable of independently delivering complete controls subsystems or moderate-complexity automation projects from design through integration, FAT, and commissioning. Management involvement should primarily be required for major technical decisions, significant scope or schedule changes, commercial matters, resource requirements, or customer-level issues.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Engineering, Automation Engineering, Mechatronics or related field.
- 4+ years of relevant experience, preferably in automation, manufacturing equipment, test systems, or custom machinery.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to develop clear schematic and technical documentation.

- Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.

Required Conditions
- Valid driver license and vehicle.
- Legal to work in Canada
Work Workplace
- In-person in office and workshot lab.
- Occasional on-site installation and support at the client manufacturing facilities.
