Detailed Overview

The Coordinator, Distribution Pharmacy Services is responsible for leading and coordinating the pharmacy distribution operations including parenteral services, ward stock and other designated areas at the assigned site and for the development, implementation and monitoring of pharmacy professional practice standards, guidelines and protocols in accordance with Lower Mainland Pharmacy Services initiatives. Works collaboratively with the Manager, Pharmacy Services to promote a progressive distribution pharmacy service; develops, implements and monitors programs and services within the site which includes parenteral services, ward stock, drug utilization, staff orientation, staff development and continuing pharmacy education. Supervises and provides professional practice leadership to pharmacists and other designated staff through guidance, support and advice; coordinates staff work assignments, evaluates employee performance, determines training needs and recommends related staff training/orientation. Acts as a resource for healthcare professionals; provides written contributions to pharmacy operations policies and procedures, drug information bulletins, departmental newsletters and manuals; performs pharmacist functions, as required.

Responsibilities

- Coordinates pharmacy distribution operations at the assigned site including developing and monitoring the implementation of pharmacy professional practice standards; works collaboratively with the Manager, Pharmacy Service to promote a progressive pharmacy distribution service by developing, implementing and evaluating programs and services within the site including parenteral services, ward stock, drug utilization, staff orientation and continuing pharmacy education.
- Develops, monitors, reviews and implements procedures relating to pharmacy distribution services; collaborates with the Manager, Pharmacy Services to ensure accreditation standards, professional practice standards and regulatory requirements for pharmacy distribution services are met; identifies and troubleshoots inconsistencies and initiates applicable corrective action, as required; participates in on-going team planning, development, evaluation and quality improvement activities.




- Provides professional practice leadership to pharmacists and other designated staff by providing guidance, support and technical advice; identifies and determines staff training needs and develops related training/orientation; performs staff performance evaluations and reviews individual qualified practice concerns with staff and the Manager; recommends appropriate disciplinary action, as required.
- Schedules the activities of department staff such as work assignments/schedules to ensure appropriate staff coverage including the on-call schedule; identifies and provides recommendations regarding staff department needs; oversees the supervision of student pharmacists, pharmacy residents and students, pharmacy technician and assistant students.
- Acts as a pharmacy practice resource for internal health care professionals; provides consultation and direction in areas of expertise; Identifies and prioritizes professional practice issues and develops staff education needs; develops, implements and evaluates educational programs for pharmacists and designated staff.
- Develops orientation programs, promotes education and research initiatives, organizes in-services and facilitates an environment which fosters quality, patient focused care, teamwork and effective decision-making.
- Completes workload measurement and various statistics and other reports, as required; develops and maintains statistical data related to department activity levels, attendance, leaves of absences and performance appraisals.
- Collaborates with the Manager, Pharmacy Services in the recruitment and selection of staff; applies provisions of the applicable various collective agreement including the administration of the attendance awareness program and progressive discipline, as required.
- Maintains quality drug distribution services for the department including the dispensary, parenteral services, ward stock and narcotic areas; reviews and approves changes according to usage patterns and medication safety requirements; communicates changes to staff, as needed.

implements and evaluates practice-based reference manuals, policies and procedures consistent with Lower Mainland Pharmacy Services and qualified practice standards; identifies and recommends changes in distribution pharmacy practice by monitoring practice trends, identifying changing patient care needs and evidence-based best practice in Pharmacy.
- Provides written contributions to pharmacy information bulletins, departmental newsletters and manuals; compiles written information to ensure the facility receives the most current and accurate information regarding pharmaceuticals and their use.
- Represents the Lower Mainland Pharmacy Services on various committees and teams; establishes and maintains relationships with related departments, other hospitals, agencies, educational institutions and associations.
- Performs pharmacist functions as required.
- Performs other related duties, as assigned.

Qualifications

Education, Training & Experience Current registration as a Pharmacist with the College of Pharmacists of British Columbia. Certificate of completion of an accredited Hospital Pharmacy Residency Program, supplemented with five (5) years' recent, related clinical pharmacy or distribution experience, including two (2) years’ supervisory/leadership experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
