JOB SUMMARY

RNC is seeking an experienced Intermediate Fire Protection Engineer to support fire protection engineering projects for nuclear, power-generation and other complex industrial facilities.

The successful candidate will independently perform engineering assessments, develop design and modification documentation, and provide practical solutions that integrate fire protection, building code, nuclear safety and facility operating requirements. The position requires sound engineering judgment, strong technical writing skills and the ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams and clients.

Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Ontario is mandatory. Previous experience in the Canadian nuclear industry is considered a strong asset.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

· Prepare and review fire protection designs, calculations, technical specifications, engineering reports and design modification packages.

· Conduct fire hazard assessments, fire protection assessments, code compliance reviews and system evaluations.

· Develop fire protection strategies for current facilities, facility modifications and refurbishment projects.

· Evaluate active and passive fire protection systems, including:

o Automatic sprinkler and water-spray systems o Fire-water supply and fire pumps o Standpipe and hose systems o Fire detection and alarm systems o Special-hazard suppression systems o Fire separations, firestopping and structural fire protection o Smoke control and life-safety systems

· Perform building and fire code analyses and support the development of alternative solutions where prescriptive compliance is impractical.

· Translate regulatory, code and client requirements into clear and traceable engineering requirements.

· Review drawings, calculations and vendor documentation for technical adequacy and code compliance.

· Support field investigations, site walkdowns, inspections, testing and commissioning activities.

· Identify fire hazards, design deficiencies and risks, and recommend proportionate corrective actions.

· Prepare scopes of work, level-of-effort estimates, schedules and technical proposals.

· Coordinate technical interfaces with architectural, mechanical, electrical, structural, process, civil and nuclear-safety disciplines.

· Provide technical support during regulatory reviews, client audits and authority-having-jurisdiction discussions.

· Mentor junior engineers and review work prepared by other technical personnel.

· Perform engineering work in accordance with RNC’s quality-management procedures and professional obligations.

EDUCATION

- Bachelor’s degree in fire protection, mechanical, civil, chemical or another relevant engineering discipline.




- Current registration and good standing as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Professional Engineers Ontario.

EXPERIENCE/REQUIRMENTS · Typically 5–10 years of relevant fire protection engineering experience.

· Demonstrated knowledge of fire protection engineering principles and their application to industrial or other complex facilities.

· Working knowledge of applicable Canadian building and fire codes and relevant NFPA and CAN/ULC standards.

· Experience preparing engineering calculations, assessments, specifications, reports and design documentation.

· Ability to interpret codes and standards and apply engineering judgment where requirements are performance-based, incomplete or conflicting.

· Strong technical writing, communication, organization and problem-solving skills.

· Ability to manage assigned work, budgets and schedules with limited supervision.

· Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary project teams.

· Ability and willingness to travel to client sites within Ontario and elsewhere in Canada, as required.

· Eligibility to work in Canada.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS/Nice to have

· Engineering experience in the Canadian nuclear industry, including work at operating nuclear power plants, nuclear laboratories, reactor projects or other CNSC-regulated facilities.

· Familiarity with CSA N293, CNSC regulatory documents and nuclear fire protection programs.

· Experience with nuclear design modifications, configuration management, design-basis documentation or engineering-change-control processes.

· Knowledge of the National Building Code of Canada, Ontario Building Code, Ontario Fire Code, NFPA standards, FM Global guidance and applicable CAN/ULC standards.

· Experience with fire modelling, hydraulic calculations, combustible loading assessments or fire-safe-shutdown analysis.

· Experience developing alternative solutions and supporting discussions with building officials, fire services or regulatory authorities.

· Experience working within a nuclear quality-assurance program.

· Consulting engineering and client-facing project experience.

· Existing or previous security clearance for Canadian nuclear facilities.

· Sound engineering judgment
