High Voltage Design Engineer | Vancouver, BC

Want to own substation design across a fast-growing hyperscale AI infrastructure portfolio — and shape the standards the business builds on?

Our client is a leading AI Cloud Service Provider, delivering large-scale GPU clusters for AI training and inference through a vertically integrated platform of grid-connected land and data centers in renewable-rich regions across the US and Canada.

They're looking for a High Voltage Design Engineer to act as Owner's representative in the design of High and Medium Voltage substation infrastructure across their Canadian data center portfolio — partnering with utilities, EPCs, and internal stakeholders to deliver standardized, scalable, and highly reliable substation solutions, reporting to the VP of Engineering.

This is a genuine opportunity to own substation design across a growing portfolio of greenfield and brownfield projects, in a business at a genuinely exciting stage of its growth.

Responsibilities

- Lead and review the detailed design of HV/MV substations (typically 12kV–287kV), including one-line diagrams, protection philosophies, switchyard layouts, grounding/lightning protection, and AC/DC auxiliary systems
- Perform and/or review engineering studies — short circuit, load flow, grounding, insulation coordination, and equipment duty
- Develop and maintain standardized substation design templates to support rapid deployment of data center campuses
- Act as Owner's Engineer, overseeing external engineering consultants and EPC contractors,

and reviewing and approving deliverables, calculations, drawings, and specifications
- Support value engineering and constructability reviews, develop technical specifications for major substation equipment, and support procurement including technical bid evaluations
- Provide engineering support through construction, Factory and Site Acceptance Testing, commissioning, and energization — including site visits and coordination across civil, structural, P&C;, and SCADA disciplines

Skills – Must Have

- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems preferred)
- 7–10 years' progressive experience in substation engineering, ideally with hands-on detailed design from a consulting/engineering firm or utility environment
- Proven track record delivering substation projects from concept through construction and commissioning
- Strong knowledge of substation physical design, grounding, lightning protection, insulation coordination, and protection & control
- Familiarity with engineering tools such as ETAP, SKM, PSCAD, PSSE, or CDEGS an asset
- Solid understanding of applicable Canadian codes and industry/utility standards
- Excellent communication skills across utilities, contractors, and internal stakeholders

Benefits

- Annual performance bonus
- Restricted stock (equity) vesting over three years and growing in value as the company scales
- 100% company-paid medical, dental, and vision premiums for employees and dependents
- RRSP with company match
- 3 weeks' vacation plus paid holidays

Salary Up to $170,000 CAD base
