Position: Permanent, live-in

Compensation: $18–$22 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications

Hours: Approximately 30–35 guaranteed paid hours per week

Benefits: Private furnished room and meals provided at no cost

About the PositionWe are seeking a kind, dependable and responsible live-in companion and household support worker for an independent 90-year-old woman living in her farmhouse between Hanover and Durham, Ontario.

She immigrated to Canada from Baden-Württemberg, Germany, and remains strongly connected to her German language, culture and traditions. A companion who speaks German—or who is familiar with German culture, food and customs—would be especially welcome. The ability to converse with her in German, prepare familiar German or European meals and share an appreciation of her cultural background would add considerable value to the companionship aspect of the position.

Applicants from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply. German-language ability and cultural familiarity are preferred assets, not requirements.

She is mobile, continues to drive and is presently quite self-sufficient. Following the recent passing of her husband, she would benefit from regular companionship, assistance with household activities and the reassurance of having a capable person nearby should she require help.

This is primarily a companionship, household-support and safety role. It is not presently an intensive nursing or personal-care position. The successful applicant will have clearly scheduled working hours and defined off-duty time.

Primary Responsibilities

- Provide friendly, respectful companionship and regular safety check-ins
- Engage her in conversation and activities that support social connection and emotional well-being
- Speak German with her when possible and show an interest in her German heritage and life experiences
- Prepare nutritious meals, including familiar German or European dishes when appropriate
- Assist with grocery planning and shopping
- Perform light housekeeping,

laundry and household organization
- Accompany or assist with appointments, errands and occasional outings
- Provide reasonable mobility assistance using safe techniques
- Observe and report meaningful changes in health, mobility or behaviour to the family
- Respond calmly and appropriately in an emergency
- Contact family members, healthcare professionals or emergency services when necessary
- Help maintain a safe, comfortable and orderly home environment

The position does not currently involve routine nursing care, medication administration, bathing, toileting or unsupported lifting from the floor. If care requirements change, the duties, hours and compensation will be reviewed with the employee. Schedule and Living ArrangementThe position provides approximately 32–35 guaranteed paid hours per week, normally spread across five scheduled days. The exact schedule will be established by mutual agreement and may include some flexibility for shopping trips, appointments and occasional special circumstances.

This is not a 24-hour working shift. The employee will have clearly defined off-duty periods and regular days off. Any additional working time must be recorded and will be paid in accordance with Ontario employment standards.

A private furnished room and meals will be provided at no cost in addition to the hourly wage.

The employee may pursue online studies or other remote work during clearly designated off-duty periods, provided those activities do not interfere with scheduled responsibilities.

Preferred Qualifications

- Conversational or fluent German would be a significant asset
- Familiarity with German culture—particularly southern Germany or Baden-Württemberg—would be welcome

- Previous experience supporting an older adult in a private home, retirement residence or community setting
- Personal Support Worker certification is preferred but not mandatory for a suitably experienced candidate
- Current First Aid and CPR certification, or willingness to obtain it
- Training or experience in fall prevention, mobility assistance and secure transfers
- Valid Ontario driver’s licence and satisfactory driving record
- Legally entitled to work in Canada
- Ability to provide a satisfactory vulnerable-sector police check
- Strong personal and employment references
- Good judgment, patience, discretion and communication skills
- Comfortable living and working in a rural environment

Ideal CandidateThe ideal candidate is warm, compassionate and genuinely enjoys spending time with an older person. They will appreciate her independence and dignity while providing companionship, practical assistance and peace of mind. A person who can communicate in German and understands German customs, cooking and family traditions may be particularly well suited to the role. However, character, reliability, compatibility and caregiving judgment will remain the most important selection criteria.

The successful candidate should be calm in an emergency and able to recognize when a situation requires help from family members, healthcare professionals or emergency services.

How to ApplyPlease submit

- A résumé or summary of relevant experience
- A brief introduction explaining your interest in the position
- Your level of German-language ability, if applicable
- Any relevant familiarity with German culture or senior companionship
- Your availability and preferred starting date
- Details of any PSW, First Aid, CPR or senior-care training
- Confirmation that you hold a valid driver’s licence
- Contact information for at least two references

Compensation will be based on experience, training, language skills and the final agreed schedule. Only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.
