JOB SUMMARY:

Within the context of a patient/client and family-centred framework and team-based model of care, and in accordance with Vancouver Coastal Health policies, guidelines and clinical practice documents as well as within the VCH Strategic Framework, the role provides mental health and/or substance use treatment and case management services that are inclusionary, accessible, equitable and integrated client care to Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Deaf-Blind individuals.

Supports

Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Deaf-Blind individuals who have mild to moderate mental health and/or substance use diagnoses and/or demonstrate challenges or barriers in accessing other mainstream services through comprehensive assessment, treatment planning, therapeutic intervention, crisis response and ongoing case management. Working collaboratively with clients, families, service providers and community partners, the role facilitates access to services, addresses barriers to participation, supports system navigation and promotes continuity of care across health and community service systems. The position contributes to client-centred service delivery through consultation, advocacy, accessibility planning, community collaboration and capacity-building activities that support improved client outcomes.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education & Experience

Master’s Degree in a behavioural health discipline from an accredited program. One (1) years’ recent related experience providing care to the designated client population through a holistic mental health and substance use lens; including experience working with deaf, hard of hearing and/or deaf-blind individuals and their families, or an equivalent combination of education, training or experience.

Current full registration with applicable regulatory College or eligibility for registration with the appropriate professional body or association, as applicable

Fluent in ASL (American Sign Language).

Valid BC Drivers License and access to a personal vehicle for business-related purposes, as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities





Broad knowledge of mental illness and treatment.

Broad knowledge of substance use treatment.

Broad knowledge of psychopharmacology (indications and side-effects).

Broad knowledge of supportive counselling skills.

Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively using American Sign Language (ASL) with clients and their families, colleagues and other health care staff.

Demonstrated ability to provide competent and culturally safe care in a variety of settings and with diverse populations

Demonstrated ability to promote Indigenous Cultural Safety.

Demonstrated an understanding of Trauma Informed Practice, Harm Reduction and Recovery Oriented Care.

Broad knowledge of community resources.

Broad knowledge of other health care disciplines and their role in client care.

Demonstrated understanding of health care ethics and ability to incorporate ethical decision making in practice.

Broad knowledge of adult education principles, methods and tools.

Demonstrated knowledge to assess clients at risk and knowledge of appropriate legislation acts; e.g.

Health Care Consent

Act, Mental Health Act, Adult Guardianship Act, Child, Family and Community Service Act, Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act as it relates to the rights and obligations of clients and staff.

Demonstrated ability to conduct mental health assessments and provide care planning and crisis intervention.

Demonstrated ability to apply knowledge of theory and practice to a case management process.

Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with clients and their families, colleagues, physician, and other health care staff, both one-on-one and in groups.

Demonstrated listening and information seeking skills that promotes effective communication and lead to a co-operative approach to problem solving within an interdisciplinary setting.





Demonstrated ability to establish workload priorities.

Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively as a member of an interdisciplinary team.

Demonstrated ability to work with individuals with diverse backgrounds.

Demonstrated ability to adjust to recent or unexpected events.

Demonstrated ability to effectively manage crisis, conflict situations and aggressive behavior and use non-violent crisis intervention and behavioral management techniques.

Demonstrated ability to provide consultation, leadership and work direction.

Ability to operate related equipment including applicable software applications.

Physical ability to perform the duties of the position The hours of work including days off and work area may be subject to change consistent with operational requirements and the provision of the Collective Agreement and applicable statutes.
