Fort Ostell Museum is seeking a dynamic and detail-oriented Museum Assistant to join our team! This position is balanced between:

· Guest services and operations (visitor engagement, cleaning, social media output, and supporting education programs and events) and

· Collection support (handling archival materials and managing database software, plus contributions to content development, research, and education initiatives).

This role offers an exciting opportunity to support the daily operations of our museum and archives, ensuring the organization and preservation of our collection along with its connection to the public.

The ideal candidate is passionate about history and culture, possesses strong organizational and computer skills, and demonstrates an active interest in engaging with visitors.

Responsibilities

Visitor Services & Museum Operations

· Welcome and assist visitors, sharing information about the museum, exhibits, collections, and Ponoka’s heritage.

· Complete opening and closing procedures and maintain a clean, secure, and welcoming museum environment.

· Support museum programs, including museum tours, outreach events, school and group visits, and guided activities.

· Assist with cleaning, signage updates, program set-up and tear-down, and general museum presentation.

Collections Management and Museum Development

· Assist with the care and preservation of collections by creating and maintaining accurate records within databases.

· Create weekly social media content.

· Assist with research, program and exhibit development, marketing, public relations, and promotional or written content.

· Maintain the organization of storage areas, ensuring collections are stored securely and systematically.

Qualifications

· Education: high school diploma; university degree preferred.





· Excellent customer service and problem-solving skills.

· Strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and social media platforms including Facebook and Instagram. Experience with CanvaPro and PastPerfect an asset.

· Ability to perform regular cleaning and physical duties, including setting up tables, chairs, and program materials. Be able to lift up to 20 kilograms.

· Ability to work independently as a self-starter.

· Exceptional organizational skills with attention to detail in recordkeeping and storage procedures.

· Effective communication skills for teaching audiences and collaborating with team members.

· Experience in museums, heritage, education, or events is an asset.

· Interest or experience in research, programming, marketing, public relations, writing, or content creation is an asset.

This is a part-time position:

· Sept- May long weekend = 9 hours/week

· Mid May to end of August = 30 hours/week

Rate of Pay: $18-21/hour depending on education and experience.
