Description
About the Clients:
We're seeking a compassionate caregiver for a couple in Metcalfe—a husband (82) and wife (76) who have been in their family home for 45 years. The wife has been diagnosed with dementia affecting her short-term memory, though she remains delightful and recognizes loved ones. The husband is cognitively sharp but experiencing caregiver burnout, hearing loss, and managing kidney disease.
Both are physically mobile and independent with walking. They're Scottish, religious in a gentle way, and need someone patient who can navigate the husband's strong personality while providing kind, consistent support. The home's upper level needs organization, but the main floor is well-maintained.
Responsibilities:
- Provide personal care support including toileting and hygiene assistance
- Prepare light meals, reheating food, and offering mealtime reminders
- Manage medication reminders to ensure proper adherence
- Assist with cleaning and laundry (the home has fallen behind on basic housekeeping)
- Offer memory prompts and gentle redirection for the wife's cognitive needs
- Provide companionship to reduce isolation and loneliness
- Occasional transportation for errands or appointments
- Support both clients simultaneously while respecting their individual needs
- Help establish and maintain daily routines
What We're Looking For:
- Experience caring for multiple clients, particularly couples
- Strong memory care and dementia support background
- Personal care skills including toileting assistance
- Patience with clients who may be resistant to help initially
- Ability to communicate clearly with someone who has hearing loss
- Initiative and problem-solving skills for household tasks
- Calm, positive demeanor that brings comfort
- Reliable and consistent presence
- English speaking
- Valid driver's license for occasional outings
- Understanding that the husband is adjusting to accepting help after years of independence
Schedule:
This is a daily care position starting with weekdays (Monday–Friday) to allow the family to adjust gradually. Shifts are typically midday blocks (e.g., 12:00 PM–3:00 PM), with flexibility to expand hours or days as needs evolve. The family is ready to start within one week of finding the right match and is committed to consistent, long-term care to keep both clients safely in their home.
