Position Summary

Reporting to the Chief Scientific Officer, the Physician Researcher provides clinical and scientific expertise to support mental health and addiction research, evaluation, policy development, and knowledge translation initiatives. Working on a casual basis, the incumbent collaborates with research teams, clinical leaders, academic partners, and government stakeholders to provide evidence-informed guidance on research design, clinical practice, service delivery, and mental health and addiction policy.

This role contributes to a variety of projects by critically evaluating scientific evidence, identifying care gaps and emerging trends, and providing expert advice on clinical and system-level implications of research findings. The Physician Researcher supports the advancement of Alberta's mental health and addiction priorities through a strong understanding of relevant legislation, recovery-oriented systems of care, and best practices.

Hours and assignment duration will vary depending on project requirements and operational needs.

Responsibilities:





- Provide clinical subject matter expertise to support mental health and addiction research projects.

- Critically appraise and interpret published literature, research findings, and emerging evidence.

- Advise project teams on clinical practices, standards of care, treatment guidelines, and service delivery models.

- Identify and assess gaps in care, policy implications, and opportunities for quality improvement within mental health and addiction systems.

- Provide expert consultation to senior clinical leaders, researchers, academic partners, and government stakeholders.

- Contribute to the development of research reports, publications, presentations, briefing materials, and knowledge translation products.

- Support the interpretation and application of the Alberta Mental Health Act and other relevant legislation within research and policy contexts.

- Provide expertise regarding clinical matters and services that support recovery-oriented care.

- Participate in project meetings, advisory committees, and stakeholder engagement activities as required.

- Ensure recommendations are evidence-informed and aligned with current best practices in mental health and addiction care.

Education and Experience:

- Medical degree (MD) and eligibility for licensure or current licensure to practice medicine in Canada.

- Demonstrated expertise in mental health and/or addiction medicine.

- Minimum five (5) years of experience as a practicing clinician and/or researcher in the mental health and/or addiction field.

- Minimum two (2)



years of experience providing advisory support to senior clinicians, academic institutions, or government organizations.

Preferred Qualifications

- Graduate-level training in epidemiology or population health.

- Academic appointment or affiliation with a recognized post-secondary institution.

- Experience leading or contributing to peer-reviewed research publications.

- Experience supporting health policy development, program evaluation, or system planning initiatives.

- Knowledge of provincial and national mental health and addiction strategies and frameworks.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

- Demonstrated ability to critically evaluate and synthesize scientific and clinical literature related to mental health and addiction.

- Strong knowledge of clinical practices, treatment guidelines, service delivery models, and policy considerations in mental health and addiction.

- In-depth knowledge of the Alberta Mental Health Act.

- In-depth knowledge of the Alberta Recovery Model and related services and supports.

- Excellent analytical, communication, consultation, and stakeholder engagement skills.
