Pipeline Protection / Underground Utility Inspector
Marclay Group is seeking an experienced Pipeline Protection / Underground Utility Inspector to support ongoing projects throughout the Lower Mainland.
This is a field-based position focused on monitoring excavation and construction activities around existing underground infrastructure. The ideal candidate will have strong underground utility experience and must have previous line locating experience.
Candidates with backgrounds in underground electrical, telecommunications, water, sewer, civil construction, or other utility sectors are encouraged to apply.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide field oversight of excavation and construction activities around existing underground utilities.
- Monitor work occurring in proximity to critical underground infrastructure.
- Review utility drawings, locate information, and available records prior to excavation.
- Confirm and verify utility locations in the field.
- Identify and mark underground utilities using appropriate locating equipment and techniques.
- Monitor hand excavation, hydrovac daylighting, and mechanical excavation around existing utilities.
- Ensure required clearances and safe excavation practices are maintained.
- Monitor exposed utilities to ensure they are adequately supported and protected.
- Identify potential conflicts or risks to existing underground infrastructure.
- Coordinate with contractors, equipment operators, utility representatives, and project personnel.
- Maintain accurate daily reports, photographs, and field documentation.
- Immediately communicate unsafe conditions, utility conflicts, or activities that could result in damage to underground infrastructure.
Required Qualifications
- Previous underground utility experience.
- Previous line locating experience is required.
- Strong understanding of underground utility construction and excavation practices.
- Experience interpreting utility drawings, records, and locate information.
- Understanding of safe excavation practices around existing underground infrastructure.
- Experience with hydrovac daylighting and mechanical excavation around utilities.
- Strong communication and field documentation skills.
- Ability to work independently and confidently communicate with contractors and equipment operators.
- Valid BC driver's licence.
Considered an Asset
- Pipeline protection or utility inspection experience.
- Natural gas utility experience.
- Electrical or telecommunications utility experience.
- Civil underground construction experience.
- Ground disturbance training.
- Utility locating certifications or formal locating training.
- API 1169 certification.
- Familiarity with CSA Z662.
- Previous experience working around critical or high-consequence underground infrastructure.
Position Details Position: Pipeline Protection / Underground Utility Inspector
Location: Lower Mainland, BC
Employment: Full-Time / Project-Based
Schedule: Primarily daytime field work, with occasional evening, night, or weekend work depending on project requirements
