The Return to Work Specialist will be responsible for coordinating a goal oriented partnership between employees, managers, unions and health care professionals. As an integral member of the Occupational Health, Safety, Infection Prevention & Control portfolio, the Return to Work Specialist will employ the principles of integrated disability management in order to ensure effective early intervention and safe return to work of employees from Short Term Disability (STD), Workers Safety & Insurance Board (WSIB), and Long Term Disability (LTD). In addition, the Return to Work Specialist will provide support to managers on attendance related issues involving employee illness/injury, modified work design and permanent accommodations.

The Return to Work Specialist works collaboratively with the Employee Relations Consultant in the review of illness/injury trends, with a view to the development of prevention initiatives and participates and assists management in grievance preparation and attends at mediations and arbitrations as required.

Skills and Qualifications Required

Degree in a related discipline; e.g. Physiotherapy/Occupational Therapy/Kinesiology/Social Work/ Registered Nurse/ Occupational Health & Safety/Human Resources

Completion of, or in the progress of completing an appropriate program and/or working toward credentials in the fields of Disability Management (Certified Disability Management Specialist)

Certification as a Disability Management Professional/Specialist, preferred

Three years of experience in Disability Management, preferably within the healthcare sector An equivalent combination of relevant education and recent related work experience may be considered

Position Responsibilities





Facilitates the timely and safe return to work of all employees following injury or illness, as a central coordinator

Reviews documentation provided by healthcare practitioners ensuring effective assessment and timely treatment, coordinating assessments where required

Reviews incidents/accidents resulting in WSIB application/coverage on a daily basis

Reviews the nature and cause of the incident and associated documentation to ensure compliance with appropriate criteria specified in the Workplace Safety & Insurance Act

Liaises with WSIB officials regarding claims; meets with WSIB investigators regarding claims investigation

Investigates all WSIB claim re-occurrences to determine nature and cause of re-occurrence

Reviews incidents/accidents resulting in use of sick time

Liaises with physicians, therapists and other healthcare providers regarding the early and safe return to the workplace
