Reporting to the Working Foreperson – Municipal By-Law Enforcement, this position provides for the safe movement of persons (primarily school aged children) to and from school when crossing public roadways and intersections by observing gaps in the traffic and leading the persons across the roadway or intersection in accordance with the Ontario Highway Traffic Act.
BASIC JOB DUTIES:
- Providing safe movement to persons who are walking through designated school crossing locations.
· Position provides for the safe movement of persons to and from school when crossing public roadways and intersections by observing gaps in the traffic and leading the persons across the roadway or intersection in accordance with the Ontario Highway Traffic Act. · Observing traffic and create safe opportunities for persons to cross the intersection/road
· Supervising persons while crossing.
· Observing and recognize all road hazards, use good judgement while interrupting the flow of traffic.
· Report problems and unsafe conditions to the Supervisor as soon as possible. Document and report any incidents, accidents, injuries, hazards, or suspicious persons / vehicles to provide to the Supervisor.
· Obey all traffic safety regulations.
· Wearing proper uniform and safety equipment during work.
· Performing other related duties as assigned by the client contact or ASP.
· Maintain proper punctuality to ensure the safety of all persons, during designated hours.
· Remain at the designated location for the instructed amount of time.
QUALIFICATIONS:
· Minimum Grade 12 secondary education or equivalent.
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
· Keen alertness to surroundings and an ability to maintain a high degree of mental concentration, with visual and hearing ability to recognize traffic at a protected distance (approximately 300 feet).
· Ability to display a school crossing stop sign (weighing approximately two pounds) in an upright position so that it is visible to vehicular traffic approaching from all directions while extending the other arm parallel for one minute on a frequent basis. Ability to walk pedestrians safely across busy intersections, and react safely and decisively to traffic conditions.
· Ability to deal with the public and respond to inquiries in a tactful and courteous manner.
· Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
· Possession of a valid Ontario Class G driver’s licence with a satisfactory driving record is an asset. Must have access to a reliable mode of transportation to crossing guard locations.
· Requires a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Police Criminal Records Check at the candidate’s expense. Valid certification in Standard First Aid & CPR Level “C” is an asset.
· Ability to perform the above-noted employment activities outside in diverse weather conditions (e.g. extremes of heat, humidity, cold, rain, snow, sleet, wind etc.).
· Flexibility to work a split shift schedule during the school year (September through June), for a total of 2 to 3 hours per day depending on the area of assignment.
Pay: $17.60 per hour
