Senior Business Intelligence Analyst – Power BI

Client: Government of Alberta (GoA)

Project: Data Strategy & Various Data Projects

Location: Edmonton, Alberta

Work Arrangement: Primarily Remote – Must Work from Within Canada

Onsite: Up to 15% in Edmonton, as required

Contract: Approximately 1,036.75 hours

Hours: 36.25 hours/week | 7.25 hours/day

Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:15 AM–4:30 PM Alberta Time

Job Overview

The Government of Alberta is seeking a Senior Business Intelligence Analyst – Power BI to support its Data Strategy and Data Centre of Excellence initiatives.

The successful candidate will have solid hands-on experience in Power BI, data analysis, data modelling, data visualization, DAX, SQL, analytical solutions, and data storytelling. The resource will work with complex and regulated datasets to develop dashboards, reports, KPIs, analytical models, and data products that support strategic decision-making across government.

This role requires a candidate who can work across both technical and business functions, understand stakeholder requirements, transform data into meaningful insights, and communicate findings effectively to technical and non-technical audiences.

Key Responsibilities

- Design, develop, and optimize advanced Power BI solutions using complex and regulated datasets.

- Develop interactive Power BI dashboards, reports, KPIs, and analytical models.

- Analyze large and complex datasets to identify trends, patterns, and actionable insights.

- Perform trend analysis, predictive analytics, forecasting, statistical analysis, and data mining.

- Gather, analyze, document, and validate requirements for analytical and BI projects.

- Translate business requirements into effective end-to-end analytical solutions.

- Combine and integrate raw data from multiple sources and across different business domains.

- Develop complex DAX measures,



calculated columns, and advanced time-intelligence calculations.

- Use SQL for data transformation, querying, and analytical processing.

- Design and develop data models and analytical data products.

- Conduct data quality audits, reviews, and analysis.

- Capture and maintain business and technical metadata for data products.

- Develop KPIs, metrics, outcomes, key results, and performance indicators.

- Integrate quantitative and qualitative data to generate business insights.

- Create customized reporting and visualizations using multiple data sources.

- Present analytical findings and provide data-driven recommendations to business users and executives.

- Explain complex data concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

- Support strategic planning and evidence-based decision-making.

- Identify and escalate issues, risks, and data-quality concerns.

- Collaborate effectively with GoA employees, vendors, and other project stakeholders.

Requirements

Required Qualifications

- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field. Equivalent education may be considered.

- 5+ years of direct hands-on experience designing, developing, and optimizing advanced Power BI solutions.

- 5+ years of experience using Power BI visualization techniques and features for data storytelling.

- 5+ years of experience analyzing large and complex datasets using Power BI and Azure analytics tools.





- 5+ years of experience presenting and communicating data-driven insights to executives and business users within a government organization.

- 5+ years of experience understanding, gathering, and developing requirements for analytical projects.

Preferred Qualifications

- 5+ years of experience translating business requirements into analytical solutions and delivering end-to-end BI solutions.

- 5+ years of experience combining raw data from multiple data sources and across business domains.

- 5+ years of experience working directly with clients/stakeholders and explaining complex data principles.

- 5+ years of experience developing complex DAX measures, calculated columns, and advanced time intelligence.

- 3+ years of experience using SQL for data transformation, querying, and analytical processing in large-scale environments.

- 5+ years of experience developing visualizations, dashboards, and analytical models.

- 3+ years of experience working with large government datasets.

Work Arrangement

- Position is primarily remote.

- Candidate must be located in Canada and perform the work from within Canada.

- Candidate must provide their own computer, software, equipment, and remote-work setup.

- Windows is strongly preferred because of compatibility with Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD).

- GoA will provide required system credentials and access.
