School District 72 is looking for a Casual Trades Assistant to join our team of professionals who strive to bring the district's learning beliefs to life.

School District 72 (Campbell River) is located on the east coast of central Vancouver Island, extending north to Sayward and south to Oyster River. The district also includes the outer islands of Read, Cortes, and Quadra. The district serves over 5,600 students in 18 schools with a diverse range of programs that are progressive and responsive to the educational needs and interests of students.

About The Role

Reporting to the Director of Operations and the Trades Department Team Leads, the Trades Assistant carries out general maintenance and trades work including the use of various powered equipment in support of the district facilities and maintenance operations. The incumbent assists skilled trades staff with repair, installation, maintenance, and construction activities while helping to maintain safe, functional, and welcoming learning environments.

- Assist trades staff and Trades Team Leads with maintenance, repair, renovation, and construction projects.
- Perform general labour tasks related to carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting, grounds, and other maintenance activities as assigned.
- Complete minor maintenance and repair work orders independently or under supervision, including basic repairs to building fixtures, furnishings, and equipment. Assist with moving and setting up furniture, equipment, and classroom resources.
- Assist with installations, replacements, and adjustments of building components, furniture, equipment, and materials.
- Carry out preventative maintenance activities on facilities, equipment, and building systems in accordance with established schedules and procedures.
- Operate and maintain hand tools, power tools,



and maintenance equipment safely and effectively.
- Load, unload, transport, and organize materials, supplies, tools, and equipment required for maintenance projects.
- Perform basic painting, patching, caulking, hardware replacement, and other general maintenance duties.
- Maintain work sites in a clean, safe, and organized condition, including the collection and disposal of debris and waste materials.
- Respond to routine maintenance requests and support emergency repairs as directed.
- Identify and report safety concerns, equipment deficiencies, building issues, and maintenance requirements to supervisors.
- Follow WorkSafeBC regulations, District safety procedures, and safe work practices at all times.
- Participate in snow removal, ice control, and other seasonal maintenance activities, as required.
- Maintain accurate records related to work orders, inspections, maintenance activities, and materials used.
- Interact professionally with staff, students, contractors, and members of the public while working in school and district facilities.
- Other duties as assigned.

Bring your Expertise

- Grade 12 diploma is preferred.
- Minimum two years of recent full-time equivalent general labour/maintenance work experience.
- Successful completion of courses in WHMIS and Fall Protection.
- Must have the ability to read and write English.
- Physical ability to perform all assigned tasks, including heavy lifting of up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to establish and maintain a satisfactory relationship with school administration, parents, staff and students.
- Ability to work at heights including a ladder, scaffold or MEWPS (Mobile Elevating Work Platforms).
- Ability to organize individual work.
- Ability to use personal protective equipment.
- Valid B.C. Driver's License Class 5 minimum.
- A clear Criminal Record Check to be updated every five years.
