Position Summary The Structural Steel Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for structural steel fabrication and erection projects. This role reviews contract documents, performs quantity takeoffs, evaluates labour and material requirements, solicits supplier and subcontractor pricing, and supports bid submissions. The estimator works closely with project managers, detailers, engineers, and production teams to ensure estimates reflect realistic fabrication and erection strategies.
Key Responsibilities
Project Estimating
- Review structural drawings, specifications, and tender documents to determine project scope and requirements.
- Perform material quantity takeoffs for structural steel, miscellaneous metals, and connection components.
- Prepare detailed cost estimates including materials, labour, equipment, coatings, and subcontracted services.
- Develop pricing for fabrication and erection scopes where applicable.
- Identify risks, exclusions, and clarifications for inclusion in bid submissions.
Bid Preparation & Submission
- Prepare complete bid packages in accordance with client and tender requirements.
- Coordinate with suppliers and subcontractors to obtain competitive pricing.
- Assist in preparing bid summaries and management review packages.
- Participate in bid strategy meetings and value-engineering discussions.
Coordination & Communication
- Liaise with project managers, engineers, detailers, and shop personnel to validate assumptions.
- Respond to addenda and revise estimates as required prior to submission deadlines.
- Communicate scope gaps, schedule risks, and constructability concerns early in the estimating process.
- Support handover meetings with project execution teams after award.
Cost Analysis & Continuous Improvement
- Maintain historical cost databases and estimating templates.
- Analyze completed project costs versus estimates to improve accuracy.
- Support development of internal estimating standards and procedures.
- Contribute to process improvements that increase estimating efficiency and consistency.
Qualifications
Education
- Diploma or Degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Management, Structural Engineering an asset.
- Equivalent industry experience in structural steel fabrication estimating considered.
Experience
- 5–7+ years of structural steel estimating experience preferred.
- Experience estimating fabrication and erection scopes strongly preferred.
- Experience working within a structural steel fabrication environment considered an asset.
Pay: From $85,000.00 per year
