Our growing Etobicoke client who is a leader in Warehouse Distribution is looking for a Director of Safety Transport Operations to join their team. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 5 years related experience managing Safety in the Transportation field (trucking, logistics) and must have experience overseeing many drivers and 2 large yards.
Responsibilities
Be the organization’s technical lead, expert, advisor and manager in Transportation Safety regulations affairs, inspections, collision investigations.
Oversee all safety aspects of transportation operations, such as driver training, accident investigation, risk management, and system monitoring including ELDs and tracking.
Manage and lead the Transportation Safety team.
Take ownership of the Health and Safety strategy in alignment with operations.
Work collaboratively with the Director Transport Operations to help manage driver fleet and ensure operational efficiency to meet business objectives.
Work with other disciplines to provide recommendations to ensure compliance with legal requirements regarding Transportation Safety regulations.
Lead Transportation Safety Projects in collaboration with operational projects.
Conduct and ensure regular safety training programs for drivers and staff on topics such as defensive driving, hours of service, cargo securement, and hazardous materials handling.
Facilitate and participate in Risk Assessment sessions.
Represent the company escorting external official MTO inspections.
Conduct safety audits on driver ELD compliance through telematics systems.
Perform system integration monitoring where required.
Ongoing review of the structure of the Transport Safety Department to support the growing business.
Analyze transportation performance metrics to identify areas for improvement.
Investigate all on-road incidents or accidents, and near-misses to determine root causes and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
Monitor driver compliance with hours of service requirements, vehicle inspection procedures, and other safety regulations.
Work with operations on disciplinary actions.
Complete safety audits for compliance of H&S; and HTA.
Maintain safety documentation including training records, inspection reports, accident reports and regulatory filings.
Investigate and manage all insurance claims.
All other duties as assigned relating to transportation safety.
Qualifications
A minimum of 7 years progressive experience in a transportation safety management role, preferably in trucking, logistics, or related transportation field.
At least 3 years’ experience managing a team of direct reports.
Completed professional occupational safety certifications.
Proven analytical and problem-solving skills to identify and resolve discrepancies, determine the best way to handle a task, situation, or information request.
Demonstrate high level of autonomy to make decisions on the spot.
Experience in setting corporate metrics relating to transportation safety.
Experience in preparing and executing transportation safety plans.
Ability to communicate and influence people across the organization, up to executive level.
Subject matter expert in commercial vehicle and heavy equipment operation requirements as well as highway traffic laws.
Familiar with the transportation safety CSA standards.
Expert in Transportation Safety programming, secure driving best practices and safety management system processes.
Familiar with the federal and provincial Transportation laws (Canadian Transportation Act) and OHS laws (CLS Part 2, OHS Act etc.) and applicable controls to address compliance.
Must have in-depth knowledge of legislative requirements to operate commercial vehicles in Canadian provinces.
Technical knowledge in incident and collision investigations and the models and particular methodologies.
Experience in carrying out Transportation Safety Audits and inspections.
Holder of full Driving license, added bonus if you have an AZ license.
Ability to be on-call 24/7 for all emergency safety related issues.
Work schedule: Mon-Fri 8:30am-5pm with some flexibility.
Compensation: 110K-120K.
