Purpose:

The Facilities Assistant, Engineering, will support the Facilities Superintendent in optimizing and executing the maintenance schedule for all PSA Halifax facilities. Responsibilities include building maintenance, concrete and asphalt repairs, electrical and HVAC systems, safety and security systems, and other essential services such as cleaning, pest control, and office/furniture upkeep.

The successful candidate will also play a key role in supervising capital infrastructure and improvement projects, working closely with the Facilities Superintendent to ensure scope, cost, and schedule objectives are met. In addition, the Facilities Assistant will apply process improvement strategies to streamline maintenance activities and projects, ensuring efficiency and effectiveness in delivery.

Principal Accountabilities

- Assist the Facilities Superintendent with monthly inspections of terminal infrastructure to identify defects and damages requiring repair.
- Collaborate with the Operations Department to schedule and coordinate maintenance projects in alignment with terminal activities.
- Support basic project management activities, including site inspections of ongoing contracts.
- Provide technical assistance to the Engineering Department through the review and analysis of existing infrastructure.
- Supervise subcontractors on-site to ensure compliance with project requirements.
- Prepare and submit Permit to Work documentation for Facilities Superintendent approval.




- Assist with drafting tasks using AutoCAD and other relevant software.
- Draft, review, and analyze design and construction drawings, specifications, and tender documents.
- Conduct analysis of the Facilities Management System and apply process improvement strategies to enhance the Facilities Maintenance Program.

Critical Qualifications:

- Civil Engineering Technology degree with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
- Experience with port facilities maintenance considered a strong asset.
- Broad knowledge of engineering principles with strong understanding of industrial engineering, business processes, and process improvement.
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively with technical staff, skilled trades, and engineers.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a creative, solutions-oriented mindset.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team workplace.
- Excellent time management skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks.
- Self-motivated with strong initiative and leadership abilities.
- Highly safety-conscious; Class 1 CSA-approved safety footwear required.
- Ability to handle confidential information with discretion and professionalism.
- Process-driven, curious, and eager to learn how systems and infrastructure operate.
- Strong ability to motivate and engage others, with experience overcoming project management and infrastructure improvement challenges.
