In-House Construction Estimator

Drywall Plus – Ottawa, Ontario

Full-Time | In-House Position

Drywall Plus is looking for an experienced Construction Estimator to join our Ottawa team. We are seeking someone with strong construction knowledge who can take a complete set of drawings and specifications and turn them into a detailed, organized and accurate project breakdown.

This is not simply a quantity takeoff position. The successful candidate must understand how a project is actually built, identify the complete scope of work, recognize exclusions and coordination requirements, and develop reliable labour and material pricing.

Required Estimating Experience

Candidates must be proficient in estimating and completing detailed takeoffs in the following divisions:

- Drywall & Interior Systems — steel-stud framing, drywall assemblies, shaftwall, ceilings, insulation where applicable, taping and Level 4 finishing.
- Siding / Exterior Cladding — siding and associated exterior cladding systems, trims, flashings, accessories and related components.
- Roofing — roofing assemblies, membranes, insulation, flashings, curbs, penetrations and associated roofing components.
- Masonry — brick, block, masonry assemblies, reinforcing/accessories and associated scope.

Key Responsibilities The estimator will be responsible for reviewing complete tender packages and developing a proper project breakdown, including:

- Review architectural, structural and relevant mechanical/electrical drawings.
- Read specifications, general notes, schedules, details and addenda.
- Complete detailed digital quantity takeoffs.
- Break projects down by building, floor, area, wall type, assembly and scope as required.




- Identify materials, labour, equipment and subcontracted work.
- Understand wall, ceiling, exterior and roofing assemblies rather than simply measuring square footage.
- Identify fire-rated, acoustic, moisture-resistant and specialty assemblies.
- Develop labour productivity and crew requirements.
- Obtain and level supplier/subcontractor quotations.
- Identify scope gaps, drawing conflicts and coordination issues.
- Prepare RFIs and tender questions when information is unclear.
- Track addenda and incorporate revisions into estimates.
- Prepare detailed inclusions, exclusions and clarifications.
- Develop final tender pricing and assist management with bid reviews.
- Maintain organized estimate files and historical costing information.
- Assist with project handover after award so the operations team clearly understands what was carried in the estimate.

What We're Looking For The right person will have hands-on knowledge of construction estimating and be comfortable taking ownership of an estimate from the initial drawing review through final tender submission. You should be able to look at a set of drawings and understand what needs to be built, how it will be built, what is missing, what needs clarification and what it should cost.

Strong candidates will have

- Proven experience as a construction estimator.




- Robust experience with drywall, siding, roofing and masonry.
- Excellent blueprint and specification-reading skills.
- Experience with digital takeoff/estimating software.
- Strong understanding of labour productivity and material costing.
- Ability to prepare detailed scope breakdowns rather than high-level lump-sum estimates.
- Strong Excel and computer skills.
- Excellent organization and attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple tenders and closing dates simultaneously.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Knowledge of the Ottawa construction market is an asset.
