Full-Time | Permanent | Remote (Canada preferred but not required)
Lunarch Studios is looking for an experienced Senior Level Designer with a strong artistic eye to join our small, fully remote indie team.
We're developing an unannounced stylized hide and seek comedy game for PC in Unreal Engine 5. We're looking for a candidate who can own the entire process of creating hide and seek maps (from initial design and blockout through gameplay iteration, set dressing, playtesting, and final fixes).
This isn't a role where you're just planning stuff out with grey boxes. You need to be comfortable thinking about how a space looks and plays, producing an attractive, fully polished environment using existing level design kits and 3D asset libraries.
What You'll Do
- Design large multiplayer maps with strong first-person and third-person gameplay, accounting for smooth player movement and navigability, verticality and casual-friendly platforming, sightlines, stealth, and hiding opportunities
- Beginning with initial design briefs and discussions, take a level through research, blockout, play-testing, set-dressing, and final polish
- Use strong composition and visual storytelling to make environments fun, distinctive, attractive, and humourous
- Position and configure gameplay elements in levels, including race courses, player and item spawn locations, sublevel boundaries, and dynamic procedural elements
- Playtest your own work, participate in team playtests, and iterate based on feedback to fix issues with pathing, collisions, unfair hiding spots, verticality, level boundaries, etc.
- Use assets economically to help optimize the performance of the game
- Contribute to other Lunarch titles and future projects in a similar role
What We're Looking For
- 5+ years of professional game development experience
- At least 2 shipped commercial titles in a related role
- Professional experience with map creation in Unreal Engine (we currently use UE5)
- Strong level design fundamentals, ideally including first-person and multiplayer games
- The ability to take levels beyond greybox into visually finished environments
- A solid artistic eye for composition, set dressing, readability, and environmental storytelling; experience with either stylized or photorealistic art is welcome
- Basic experience with material and collision setup in the engine
- Excellent judgment, attention to detail, and a habit of thoroughly testing your own work
- A self-directed and dependable disposition: you can take ownership of a task and manage your own priorities to deliver environments on time
- A collaborative and low-ego personality: you give and receive feedback well
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- A strong sense of humor and a willingness to contribute to the comedy. You should be comfortable with absurdity, suggestive humor, and jokes that occasionally make grown adults behave like twelve-year-olds.
Experience in the following areas would be a bonus, but are not required:
- Asset sourcing (FAB or other marketplaces)
- 3D art (especially creation of level kits or modification/improvement of marketplace assets)
- Lighting and atmospherics
- Unreal Blueprints
- Profiling and optimization
How We Work
We're a small indie studio. We don't run bloated AAA production pipelines. We value quality, individual ownership, pragmatic solutions, and short feedback loops over unnecessary process. We expect senior team members to make good decisions, catch their own mistakes, use resources sensibly, and deliver work the team can trust.
We're highly collaborative, with regular Discord design workshops, screen-sharing sessions, and weekly team playtests. You'll be expected to develop and review ideas with the team in real time. If your preferred style of remote work is to take a task, disappear for several days, and come back with the result, this isn't the role for you.
About Lunarch Studios
Lunarch is an independent Canadian game studio founded in 2013 by a group of math olympiad champions, professional poker players, and MIT PhD students. We’re a small, highly collaborative team that values smart design, craftsmanship, efficiency, and original ideas. Our shipped titles include Prismata (2018), Islands of Insight (2024), and The Artisan of Glimmith (2026).
How to Apply
Please ensure your application includes a list of shipped game credits where you held a level design, level art, or related role. For each title, tell us exactly what your contributions were and include a portfolio of levels you've created if possible. Highlight your Unreal Engine experience where relevant.
A live level creation test in Unreal Engine will be part of the skills assessment required for the job.
Compensation: CAD $70,000 to $110,000, depending on experience.
