Located in N.E. Calgary, the Peter Lougheed Centre (PLC) is an acute care hospital offering both inpatient and outpatient services. The PLC has over 600 inpatient beds, including Medical, Surgical, Pediatrics, Women’s Health and Critical Care. The PLC is the Vascular Centre for Southern Alberta, Southwestern Saskatchewan and Southeastern British Columbia.

The Allied Health

Department at the PLC is comprised of Rehabilitation and Spiritual Care staff. These staff work as vital members of the interdisciplinary team to provide patient and family-centered care throughout the hospital. Under general supervision from the Clinical Leader and Allied Health management, the successful candidate will gain experience in the assessment, treatment, education and management of patients across a variety of areas, primarily focused on the Transition and Geriatric/Older Adult Medicine units.

This position requires the successful incumbent to supervise and provide program facilitation to Therapy Assistants and Therapy Aides, as well as unit staff. At all times the Recreation Therapist I will ensure that his/her practice is evidence-based and meets Recreation Therapy clinical standards of practice. To be successful in this role, you will possess an understanding of how patients and family are at the center of care strategies to build inclusive environments that reflect the needs and supports required for the populations that we serve (ethno-cultural, equity-seeking, racialized, faith-based, LGBTQ2S+, vulnerable, marginalized, persons with disabilities, and persons of all age groups).

Description

As a Recreation Therapist I, you will be working collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team, providing comprehensive services for patients (clients, residents) within your assigned program or service area. You will ensure the level of therapeutic recreation practice is evidence based, patient-and family-centred, and in accordance with policies, procedures and standards of practice. You will complete assessment, treatment,



education and management of clients¿ treatment progress and provide clinical support and consultation.

You will collaborate and communicate with the health care team and participate in patient rounds, family conferences and meetings as related to the client and family.

Required Qualifications

Completion of bachelor's degree in Recreation Therapy, Therapeutic Recreation or Recreation and Leisure Studies. Active or eligible registration with Alberta Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA).

Additional Required Qualifications

Experience working in an adult acute care setting within the last 5 years required.

Experience in providing delegation / assignment and supervision to support personnel who are carrying out those assigned tasks and / or service components. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to interact with members of the interdisciplinary team, patients and families in a dynamic health care setting. Demonstrated problem solving, critical thinking and conflict resolution skills.

Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills. Excellent organizational and time management skills to efficiently organize and prioritize workload to keep pace in a busy multi-disciplinary patient care. Demonstrates behaviours consistent with the values of AHS – Compassion, Accountability, Respect, Excellence and Safety.

Basic Cardiac Life

Support – Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP) certification.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with program development.

Experience with geriatric /older adult population.

Experience with group facilitation.
